dejadudu
Hi. I was just plowing through this site looking for exercise tips and thought I would add something to the pot. I just read an article in the NY times 5/6/03 Section D5 that says that the conventional wisdom on water and its effects on health is wrong. For instance, it mentions that Dr Heinz Valtin published an article last November in the Journal of Physiology in which he found "no scientific support for the common advice for healthy adults to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and the the benefits - wieght loss, relief of constipation, less fatigue, increased alertness and so on - have no foundation in rigorous studies".... The rest of the article talks about runners drinking too much and causing hyponatremia...dangerously diluting their bloodstream and causing sodium levels to plummet. As for running, I have a problem that maybe someone has an insight. When I have run on the tread mill at the local gym, no matter how careful I am (starting off walking and increasing the slope of the machine and, later, increasing the speed somewhat) I get dizzy and sometimes I feel sick. This happens after 20 min. Also, I am not overweight but not athletic either. And I am in my 30's. Does anyone experience this sort of thing too? Maybe I have been drinking too much water and getting this as a result, I don't know. Thanks.

Author dejadudu
Yes, I have been eating healthy (I hope!) for some years now.
Ryan
I highly doubt you've been drinking too much water. It is pretty difficult to overhydrate. You'd puke before you could consume so much water that you'd be thinning your blood. This article you read seems to be reaching for extremes....comparing the habits of runners to generally sound fitness advice is a bit mistaken. As for your dizziness....what other activities do you experience this in? If you don't experience it otherwise, I'd give up the running for something safer and more effective for fitness improvements.
Just A Girl2
When I have run on the tread mill at the local gym, no matter how careful I am (starting off walking and increasing the slope of the machine and, later, increasing the speed somewhat) I get dizzy and sometimes I feel sick. This happens after 20 min. It's best not to ignore these symptoms you experience when on the treadmill. There's got to be a root cause for the dizzyness and nausea. It sounds like your use of the treadmill is very conservative (starting off by walking, gradually increasing, only on it for 20 minutes when you start feeling this way). I really encourage you to see your/a doctor and explain this to them, and have it investigated. There could be some underlying medical cause, and these symptoms just shouldn't be ignored.
