How do you become a waitress with no experience?

Recommended Posts

This could be a moral issue for some...My friend really wanted a waiter position this summer and he had no experience either. When he was filling out his application he lied in the "previous jobs" section and said that he had once been a waiter. They never checked (they usually never check that stuff anyways) and he got the position.

He's been there for about a month and has had no problems picking it up.

So I guess lying about experience might help you get a job.

I have to admit- all my friends that have done, or are currently waitressing have told me to "fake" my resume and lie about the experience... I wish to do it as well, and have no experience.

You'd do fine. :)

You are hot, and have a sweet disposition. :)

Just don't run out and go for fine dining, because inexperience shows itself the first time someone asks you to recommend (or serve) wine! :)

Oh I worked at a "fine dining" establishment for a summer, once. We had to come in to do a "how to properly serve wine" class. We also got to taste the wine, as I recall. Supposedly this would allow us to make better recommendations, but I never really got the hang of it.

I remember this one table that continually demanded butter. It was a family of 4, and to this day I have no idea how 4 people can consume what amounts to a cup of butter in one sitting. But they did it! They must have slathered it on everything, even their meat. I also remember hoping that they would all die of heart attacks at the table.

I'm 24. I have two unpaid internships at film studios that take up 40 hours a week. Right now I'm living at home in a moderately sized city, but will probably be moving to NY come September. I desperately need to save up some money, so I'm trying to find a night and weekend job.

I've been putting off looking because I don't even know where to begin. I'd like to be a waitress somewhere (not sure what kind), but I worry I'll be unable to land a job without any experience. I have a good amount of experience in administrative assistant, receptionist and creative roles, but no retail or serving experience.

As I write this I'm making an Excel Spreadsheet of all the nearby establishments to aid in my job search. Any tips on how to narrow down the search? What are some good places to work given the hours I have available? What kind of places would hire somebody without any experience? How should I present myself in my resume and interview?

Thanks! ;)

It's impossible. I'm a college graduate w/ a 3.5 GPA, 26 years old, I work full-time doing advertising sales. As a side job I wanted do a little waitressing on the side. They told me b/c I didn't have any waitressing experience, they would not hire me...and this was anywhere in NYC. I'm clearly not an idiot. It's really weird. Maybe you have to be a hot ditzy blonde with big boobs or something b/c it didn't work for me trying to get a job waitressing. Good luck, tho.
