XNemesisX
I was prescribed Xanax for anxiety problems a couple of months ago. I have had to take it regularly due to extreme stress I have been under. I have now noticed contractions in my lower stomach, horrible insomnia, agitation, and extreme irritability when I haven't taken it in a while. I'm trying to just stop taking them but I don't feel well at all. I'm wondering if it's related to Xanax withdrawal. I'm guessing it probably is. Anyone have experience with benzodiazepine dependency and how you got off of it? Cold turkey or titrating down to lower doses? I'm concerned that with the extreme stress and anxiety I've had that I will really need to keep taking them but I don't like the idea of physical dependency. Thanks in advance for any input you can give me.
ptrcancer
I would suggest consulting with your GP before you make any choice. As it's a perscribed medication and you've been using it only as intended, your Doctor will be able to offer better advice on the subject (your Pharmacist is another option, if you don't feel comfortable bringing the attention to a long-term Doctor). If they agree that you are physically dependant, they will likely suggest a gradual reduction of intake and if your issues with stress and anxiety continue they may be able to help you find a medication with a substantially lower risk of dependency. Benzodiazepines like xanax, clonopin, valium, and ativan are extremely addictive. If you are looking to stop taking this drug, you must go through the process slowly and wean your body off of its dependency on the drug - and you MUST do this under the supervision of a doctor. Jilly Bean
Never EVER stop taking xanax without weaning yourself down. No joke, but death is a listed side effect (if you call it that) from stopping suddenly. Drugs like this ALWAYS have to be reduced in dosage until you're off. I would also say if you are still suffering from the anxiety, then please stay on the meds! I have a highly addictive personality, and I had no problem getting off them. And I was on xanax for almost a year.
