Hi,

My mother had one done a couple of years ago. It really isn't so painful because they give the patients some pain medication to relax them. According to the doctor that perform the colonoscopy on my mom, he said that they insert a camera, and if the find anything adnormal, like lumps, they extract them right there. The patients can be a bit gassy after the colonoscopy, and I believe they cannot have anything irritable to eat for a few hours after it is done. Are you worried about something in particular?

My H had one, and he has no memory of it. They gave him an amnesiac. He said it was like being put to sleep. One second awake, the next it was over.

They gave him an amnesiac.

That happened to me, too!

It was great fun, because the doctor would explore me with his long, flexible tool, and just after he popped it out, and I was getting withdrawal symptoms...

... it started all over again!

Eventually, the nurse stormed into the room, and apologised for the overservicing.

LB, you must mean an anesthetic. I don't think being given an "amnesiac" would be terribly helpful.

I'm supposed to have one this year. My GP absolutely insists I get one because I'm over 50. A colonoscopy, like infidelity and divorce, has become yet another rite of passage for middle-aged men.:)

My sister's sister had one. But the doctor decided he only needed to do a partial one (didn't have to get pass the, ah, lower lower intestine) because it was very clear upon first look, that my problem, I mean, my sister's sister's problem was IBS and nothing more serious.

So they didn't give me any medication at all... Or if they did, it was a good amnesiac because I really don't remember.

It was mildly uncomfortable to have a cold tube in that part of the body - but kind of cool to see, uh, inside. It's really not that gross. It was easy really, but my mother had a full one, and she says it gets even more uncomfortable when they went deeper into the intestine.

I had one. It was years ago when I was suffering from a lot of digestive issues.

The prep is really awful. No one talks about this, but that was my experience. You can't eat anything and you have to take this stuff that makes you have....forceful bowel movements. By the end of the prep, you are basically ****ting water.

After all that you go to the doctor. Mine was done in the doctor's office, I didn't go to a hospital. They put an IV in and shot me up with valium, had me lay down on my side wearing one of those paper gowns that ties in the back so your ass is completely exposed. I passed out. When I woke up, I was still really out of it and my sister had to drive me home.

A few days later, I got to see what my colon looks like. That was weird.

The prep.....

Exactly. I know he's quite anxious about this part, as am I. Just feel for him having to suffer through it. I did buy some gravel so hopefully that will help if he feels sick to his stomach.

I have a list of stuff he can and can't eat, on the days leading up to his procedure.

I thought this was only for men...

Women have this procedure done as well. Usually once you turn 40 or around there, but if colon cancer runs in your family, then it could be earlier and more often, not just once every 3-4 years.

He isn't so worried about the actual procedure because of the drugs so won't he feel it, I guess the worry afterwards will be, if they find something, but right now for some reason the focus is more on the prep and how he's going to feel and react to it.

*Doesn't help that I have a major barf phobia!* Though I'm gonna keep the comments to myself and not let him know that I'm anxious too.

Thanks for the replies!!

I don't remember the prep being so bad - but I'm already very regular (what with all the All-bran) so really, it all came out at one fell swoop.

Ok, I am no professional, but perhaps it would make it easier if he increased his fiber intake this week - you know, get some of it out now.

Also, for me, there definitely wasn't any barfing involved. I'm a bit perplexed. Did others barf?

Yeah as of tonight he isn't going to eat meat or any fatty foods (fries etc) and stick to lighter meals and things that are easy to digest.

I figure if someone has a weak stomach, all the poopin' and maybe some nausea, they'll throw up. We'll see...Maybe all will be fine and the worrying is for nothing.

Nah, it was definitely an amnesiac drug - Versed. It is something that is given to help patients not be aware of a procedure when they are not entirely under. I had that same amnesiac drug both times I had surgery because of anxiety about general anesthesia.

Absolutely. I think grogster might have had one too many before posting.

Anyway, I have only heard these sorts of drugs referred to as amnestic, not amnesiac. But that doesn't mean they're both correct, I guess. Not too sure what the correct usage is, and this irritates the anal part of me.

I had one last September.. it's nothing.. the preparation is worst than the actual 'scopy'...

I felt absolutely nothing.. I slept the whole time.. I even had the 'stomach' test .. I wasn't suppose to sleep until I had to swallow the tube.. I have no idea how they got it in.. because I was sleeping before.. he even introduced the tube in my mouth.

It's nothing.. nothing at all.. trust me..

I have never heard anything so disappointing in my entire life. :(

I know.. but where they introduce the camera.. I didn't really want to feel anything anyway..

Things aren't going well here, he's behind in taking this stuff that makes you poop and he's grumpy too. I know this stuff he has to take is gross and I feel awful for him that he has to take it, but if he doesn't do this properly, come tomorrow they do the colonoscopy, I would HATE for him to be told, "sorry, we need to do this procedure again, so book another appointment.." And then he'll have to drink this crap all over again.

This is the funniest description of the experience I have read.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1975542/posts

I have not had one, but some members of my family have. One of which sent me this link shortly after.

He should do the prep properly (or pooperly). I hope the test goes well and results are healthy. Early screening is a good thing.

I didn't have any...rear end problems. Ahem. My issue was all upper GI tract stuff - my stomach muscles stopped working, so I had to take medication to make the muscles contract so that I could digest food.

The prep was bad for me. I was home all day, drinking that saline crap. I was done...uh...expelling all solid materials by the first few hours, but continued to have peristalsis in my intestines and colon, even after everything was cleaned out.

I ate those icy pops/popsicles that have excessive amounts of artificial coloring in them - the doctor said it would be OK. Turns out that those food dyes can dye the lining of your digestive tract, so my intestines looked blue and green.

WWIU let us know if everything turns out OK!

No polyp, no cancer - Which is good news! But, apparently he has the beginning stages of Diverticulitis. So, it's diet change, getting used to eating more fibre etc. He isn't going to be happy with drinking alot more water (he hates drinking water). Funny thing is he's had NO symptoms of Diverticulitis.

We made it home in one piece, but he did throw up once at home. (I went outside so I wouldn't hear him -Barf phobia..) He's in bed right, not feeling well due to the IV sedation. I think his ass hurts abit too and his belly hurts.

Glad this is all over, yesterday and today were not fun days around here for him, or me.

Thanks again for the replies.

I hate water, too. It just tastes so watered-down and watery. The bottled stuff is the absolute worst. At least town water has some sort of character.

I can imagine no fate as bad as having to drink litres and litres of the stuff they commonly use to flush turds 'round the U-bend. It's disgusting.

Glad it's over and isn't anything too serious, although I googled diverticulitis (once you have one bowel disease you're curious about them all) and it doesn't sound like much fun.

Tell him this though: Fibers are fun! (use pompoms for more emphasis)

Ok so no, they're not - but they definitely helped improve my problem.

And he barfed. Poor you. Poor him. I'm starting to think my doctor only practiced a joke colonoscopy on me - and for that I am thankful (but I love my family doctor because she's very thorough yet non-invasive and she surrounds herself with non-invasive specialists). And BO, I'm lucky in that he decided not to get too far into the intestine.

Thanks Kamille.

He's resting again, I spoke to his Dr because he was in so much pain. Hopefully he'll continue sleeping and tomorrow feel alot better.

Guess I have some reading up to do on diverticulitis. And gotta learn how to pronounce it too!
