Well,

As I have already stated, I'm 5'1", and I'm 135 lbs, so that's overweight for someone that short. I don't look too big because my fat is well proportioned. I'm in between a size 8 and 6, depending on the brand. Yesterday I purchase a size 4 skirt at Banana Repulic, and it fit without me having to suck in my belly :D. I just want to be smaller, but not skinny, and yes my diet has been good, but the problem is I'm not consistent , but I say 5 out of 7 days a week is not bad for healthy eating.

Yesterday I managed to eat . 1- cereal breakfast bar and 1- Odwalla smoothie.

If you want to lose weight go see your dentist. I've lost eight lbs. already.

Oh, and I know my BMI is pretty screwed, but I did that to myself . A few years back I was on this crazy diet where must of what I lost was muscle, but what is done is done. At least I finally learned what to eat to avoid loosing muscle while loosing the fat.

Today I had my oatmeal toast and cofee for breakfast. Midmorning a had an apple with almonds, and right now I'm drinking a protein shake.

So I had my body fat tested on Friday at the gym I go to by a personal trainer.

The total caliper test was 91 which he said means my body fat is 35%!!!! That is obese, which I am not. I have had my body fat tested at another gym a year ago, done my BMI and also done my body fat measurment test online and those all say my body fat is around 28%.

I know this is silly, but do you think the guy said it was higher then it actually is to motivate me to take training session with him? Becuase he asked me about immediatly after. Plus I found the same chart they use and looked up my average from the 91 / 4 and it too came out to be around 28%.

My goal is to be around 22%, so I still need to lose some fat obviously, but I think the guy got the number wrong.

What do you think?

What do you think?

Is 22% an informed decision?

I don't concern myself with body fat percentages. I try to focus on improving my overall fitness. I want more strength and endurance.

22% falls with in the the "fitness" range for women, which is between 20% and 25%. 25% to 30% is acceptable and 31% or higher is obese, I would like to say far away from obese but higher then underweight of course.

So it's not an informed decision by a health professional, just my goal per se. If I was to feel good about my body image and my overall health at a higher level I would be okay with that.

That percentage also varies by physical activity.

Personally, I think it is better to improve your fitness first, and then let things fall into place.

Because it is a percentage, I suggest putting on some more muscle, and strenghtening those bones.

So I went into the gym yesterday and I asked them to redo my body fat %. Done by someone else this time. The total came to 67 vs 91 last time so 31% versus 35% last time. So in less then a week I guess I lost 4% of my body fat...haha, just kidding.

On a Seriuos note, since exercising I have been getting bigger, not smaller...what's up?

Be sure to keep track of your weight.

How long has it been since you started?

I've been pushing hard for nearly 5 months. I expect to reach a decent level of physical fitness in another year. It really takes time.

Not that long. Between July and December I am more active because my husband works weekends and I have them off, so I have more time to exercise. I figure skate on Wednesdays and try to hit the gym twice a week (in the past two months, but I am not always able to). Starting in July I will figure skate Wed and Sat. Go to the gym Friday and maybe Sunday or instead of the gym on Sunday take Aikido w/ my BIL.

I am not working as hard as I need to to reach my goals. It's time I stepped it up.

It's hard to tell what my weight is right now because of my colon and bowel issues, which I see a GI specialist for on Tuesday.

I need to get a scale and a measureing tape and make a record of everything and keep track once a week.

Good for you and your goals, you seem to have everything figured out, what you want and how to get there. Is your goal just to feel healthy? Because you already seem very fit, based on your height and weight...

I look at it this way. I will see muscle changes in 8 to 12 weeks. I will also see metabolic changes in 10 to 14 weeks. In 9 months I should see some significant changes.

I am treating this like an experiment, one which I want to succeed, without killing or injuring myself in the process. One day, I will make 100-mile bike rides.

I also need to be honest with myself. I've quantified and documented my physical performance. I know how big the gap between me, and an athlete like Lance Armstrong is. It is almost embarassing becuase he can grind me into the ground with the greatest of ease.

That's pretty common if you've stepped up the exercising. Your muscles are getting bigger, but the extra fat hasn't visibly reduced yet. If you keep the exercising up with the healthy eating, once you start to lose more fat you'll look not only thinner but more toned/defined. I think a lot of people get discouraged when they see themselves looking bigger at first, but if you stick with it it'll be worth it!

BTW, sorry if you already answered this, but have you considered seeing a nutritionist? My sister has one and finds her advice to be very helpful.

I have to say that I think it's really cool that you're taking the initiative to have a healthy lifestyle! Best of luck! :)

This is a really interesting thread, redfathom. I'm always fascinated by other people's eating habits.

Mine are terrible, I pretty much have been eating the same thing every day for the last 5 or so years. I'm 26, 50kg (110lbs) and about 5'2. Most days I eat:

  • B'fast: cheese and tomato toasted sandwich
  • Snack: lots o' lollies
  • Lunch: ceasar salad
  • Dinner: fish and vegies, followed by ice cream.

It doesn't make up for my nutrional sins but I do go to the gym every morning before work.

Of course, this all goes out the window on the weekend when I'm either eating nothing and drinking everything, or binging on all the worst foods in the world. I love weekends! :D

Hi, sorry it's been a while since I posted on here. Jcrew, thanks for the info, it can be very discouraging. I have not seen a nutritionist, but I do watch what I eat, for the most part. My H and I just signed up fro 10 sessions of personal training and it came with a menu plan, we just got logged into that last night so I need to take a look at it. Most of it is for food you have to prepare yourself, which is not always the best option. We do eat out, but I check before we go somewhere at the nutrition info so I can pick something lower in calories and fat.

PP, your menu does not seem too bad. I think I need to start eating more food consistantly. For breakfast I have been eating a powerbar triple threat and a slimfast shake. Those combined are about 430 calories, which is kindof high, but they have lots of protein and vitamins.

For lunch I have been having either soup, a small turkey sandwhich w/ a small salad, sushi, or a taco.

What I really want right now is a Carne Asada burrito, but that's about 600 calories so I have to pass on it.

I think once I lose the weight, 15lbs I may have a weekend of splurging :). I know that sounds bad, but I feel like I need it...

So now I will be going to the gym twice a week and figure skating twice a week. I also plan on walking 30 min. during my lunch breaks. I think it's great that you go to the gym everyday, I could never do that.

I do tend to eat less on weekends because I am more active and don't always have time. Do I eat twice a day and snack once a day.
