longlegzs80
Not sure if this topic can go here or not, but I am just curious as to people who are looking for work. I have been looking for months since I have been out of college and I have had no luck. I know the economy is very slow right now, but if anyone can relate in some way where they are having a hard time finding a job, please tell me your story. Or even the people who do have jobs, apparently I don't know how to even get one in this rough time. I have been on interviews but who knows what I am doing wrong. Any advice about jobs would be helpful. Thank you.
Tony T
The economy is very slow right now, unemployment is high, and employers are downsizing everyday to increase profit margins. That's what makes this period of time one of the greatest opportunities for people the world has ever seen. It is now that you can break out of the mold, find your own bliss by creating a product or service, and go into a business for yourself doing something that everybody needs. Forget looking for a job, make one for yourself. There's a minister on TV, he's also an author, and I heard him say one time...."There is no such thing as a money problem, only an idea problem." Start being an idea person, think in terms of creating your own opportunities with your own spirit and ideas, and you will never be without work. And when you look in the mirror, you will see your boss. You are not in the boat alone. There are millions of people out of work, thanks to terrorists, greedy and thieving corporate managers, the burst of the Internet bubble, and...as much as anything....a long overdue slump in the normal business cycle. Now start thinking about something you can do for the masses...or for just one company....and make your millions. Bill Gates did it, Ray Kroc did it, you can do it too!!! Ryan
What is your skillset? What type of work do you want to be doing? What resources/connections through your school did you use?
turtle
longlegzs80: I recently graduated from college and was unable to find a professional job. I had managers that knew me from past co-ops that said they'd love to give me a job, but they can't right now. You know, hiring freezes and whatnot. Also, most job openings are looking for 5-10 years experience and advanced degrees. No matter how well you did in school and no matter how many co-ops you may have had, the economy blows. In time it'll pick back up. Just be patient. In the meantime, pick up a couple part time jobs waitressing, bartending, clerical work, etc etc so that you can at least pay rent and pay your bills. You'll be fine. If you don't find a job by the time your 6 month grace period rolls around, you can easily defer your loan payments. Good luck and hang in there!
turtle
PS Don't feel bad about not finding a job - it's not your fault. Don't let anybody on this website tell you that you are just not looking hard enough or utilizing your resources.

Ryan
Nowadays, money is all over the defense industry. Even if you aren't technically trained in relevant areas....there may be supplemental positions. I graduated last June and had several offers from defense companies (as an engineer). It was the only market biting at the time.
Author longlegzs80
As of now, I have tried everything to get a job. Not so much getting a job in my field because I am giving myself until September to get my portfolio polished off. I have had some luck with getting interviews but other then that I have had no luck getting a job. Been really thinking about doing the freelance thing where I create graphics, logos, biz cards, cd covers, posters, letterheads, brochures, illustrations, menus, etc. I am very nervous about getting into my field of Graphic Design. So, been thinking that the best thing to do in the low time is to do some freelance work to see if anything comes about with that. Will see. Keep telling myself things will work out. Just hope it does. Thanks again.
