This former teacher of mine (from HS) emailed me out of the blue, 4 years after I had last seen him. In it, he just wrote that he wanted to "check up" on me, and complimented me by saying stuff like "very few students have shown your aptitude/motivation, much less your sense of heart, or heart, or your friendliness and warmth of personality." He then wondered why I haven't visited him (or this other teacher) since graduating HS, and then said that if I visited that we get coffee and that he hoped we would "find each other's company as invigorating as it ever was." I didn't respond back because...I wasn't really sure what to say. He had never hit on me in high school, but I've gotten this flirtatious vibe, but never responded to it. What do you guys think? Is this flirting?

I think he was recently in a breakup, and he is fantasizing about past crushes. Unless he's married...

In HS he was divorced, I don't know about now. He's much older than me (I'm 23).

How much older?

That's a surprise, eh? I wouldn't worry about it too much. Sometimes teachers and students click. It's not always a romantic thing; it's just a matter of being on a similar wavelength. As I'm sure you're aware, a lot of students just don't give a flying fig about school. If you did and were insightful in class, it probably made a great impression. I don't think he's flirting with you. After all, it's been four years. Write back, say hi, give a quick update, and tell him that if you're back in town you'll stop by his office at the HS to say hello.
