NotKelly
When I was in college 20 years ago, you went to class Monday through Friday. Friday night was party night. Today, students blow off Friday all the time and get drunk on Thursday nights. They basically have three day weekends and the colleges and professors accommodate them. What's the excuse? Well, the poor students are just so BUSY and overworked, doing all their internships (usually for no pay) and being so bright and smart... pfft. I totally agree with the High School Diploma 1901 = College Degree 1908 thing, too. College degrees today are mainly about getting a credential -- almost a must-have for a living wage -- and not about learning, unless you want to be a "gradual student" and become a researcher or professor yourself. High school students have become like trained seals, they master all the coursework and extracurriculars but they've still got the curiosity of a rock, not to mention a sense of entitlement so wide, you could drive a truck through it. But there are, what, 4000 institutions of higher ed in America, or more? They're all scrambling after those loan dollars. And they desperately need happy alums to donate more money, so, make sure you pass Johnny no matter what because you don't want Johnny or Johnny's dad to have a bad feeling about their alma mater... I work at a college and it's disgusting how not only these kids can't put English sentences together, but you're not supposed to tell them that they can't. You're supposed to stand there and applaud them as "our best and brightest." Generational resentment? Maybe, but my generation NEVER got the easy passes this one does. Then again, my parents weren't picking up the phone yelling at my professors about my grades. My parents were getting on with their lives because they were done raising me. I have a co-worker with 3 kids in college -- all she does all day is take personal phone calls from them about every little problem they have in school or with roommates or with their internships or whatever. She is always calling the registrar or bursar or health center or whoever else needs to be called. These kids should be taking care of this stuff themselves! I had to when I was in college. All I can say to conclude is, wow, Generation Spoiled is going to have a huge and nasty wake-up call now that the affluent world they have been so lovingly "prepared" for (more like coddled) is disappearing in a puff of recession. What's scary is that they actually believe they're "educated" and hence "smart" just because they have a piece of paper from a college. Listening to them put on airs almost makes me want to renounce my own college degree, just so I don't have to have anything to do with them.
JustinWolf
Blame rap music? are you serious? Blame society. Blame yourself. I'm a college student and from high school when I hd 99% everywhere have turned down to 40% and all. Why? I have no clue, college is getting harder, life in general is a lot more harder. It's all f*cked up. I need to really study and put my mind through this, it's like they want to take away our social lives for us to actually get a diploma and when we're in the real world, we ain't got no friends to back us up... damn! Virgo822
... In the five years that I have been teaching at the college level, I have noticed a very rapid transition in my student population. It seems that the new freshman are less and less mature and less and less academically prepared. They struggle with reading comprehension, openly refuse to read the assigned texts, and don't know how to take decent notes. ... Is there anyone else out there who is dealing with this? I am currently on summer break, and, I swear to God, if I experience another year like this past one, I may seriously rethink my career choice. I hear you. This has been going on for a lot more than 5 years, but the trend downwards is accelerating. George Carlin, RIP, a man who spoke truth to power his entire life, says more about why this is happening in four minutes than I can say in 40 pages. Watch him on youtube: Education and the owners of America Bottom line: If I were you, I'd start looking at other career options NOW. You don't sound like the go-along-to-get-along type that survives in the cesspools that our schools have become. Find a job in the private market where your talents and efforts will be rewarded. Good luck.
