I have been reasurching the adkins diet but would think it would be unhealthy, I work out alot so I would assume I need carbs. and won't the weight you lose come back after your done with the diet? Has anyone lost weight on this without it comming back? Don't you need carbs for your health?

i have not personally tried the atkins diet but I know people who have and they seem to lose weight fast. I consider myself to be pretty health conscience about what I eat, and I also work out 4-5 days a week. I eat very low carbs to keep weight off and because I weight train. I think that it is unhealthy to go without carbs at all. I talk to people at my gym and they say to go without carbs 6 days a week and then one day have a day where you eat what you want. Don't go crazy of course but just eat normal on that one day. I don't know, I am not a professional by any means but these are just things I have tried and heard.

My boyfriend did the protein shakes for breakfast and lunch and then would eat a dinner (usually just a meat and veggie or salad) and he lost weight in a couple of months. You can buy the protein powder at the gyms, they are not too bad.

anyway...Good Luck...let us know how it goes.

I know one person that lost weight on the Atkins diet. But, if you are active, you do need some carbs. I think it's best to eat carbs at breakfast and lunch and then just eat protein and veggies for dinner.

Your BRAIN (you know, the important bit) requires carbs to do its job. I think it is foolhardy to starve yourself of carbs.

The principles behind the Atkins diet aren't new....it's basically the ketogenic dietary approach and I've been reading about that for a good 5 years. What you heard in the gym with one "eat anything" day is known as the CKD - Cyclical Ketogenic Diet. All of these approaches attempt (and sometimes succeed) to send the body into ketosis. Eventually the brain will switch to a different energy source than carbohydrates...namely ketones.

The weight that returns from low carb approaches is water weight. The reason people have rapid losses in WEIGHT is the shedding of stored water. Carbohydrate energy stores are depleted in any instance of caloric reduction. These stores are attached to water stores several times greater in volume than the actual carbohydrates. This gets removed fairly quickly. There is also less water retention in normal dietary habits, given that there is a trivial amount of carbohydrates passing through your digestive system. Once you return to baseline eating habits (especially if you reintroduce a moderate amount of carbohydrates), the water will come back.

The flaw is in villifying one macronutrient. Neither fat, protein, nor carbohydrates cause obesity or alleviate it. Dietary fat/cholesterol was targeted in the 80s and a flood of low-fat diets came out. Protein was also a victim in the 90s by the vegetarian/vegan outbreak. None of these are sensible. A balanced dietary approach spread across 4-6 feedings a day is preferred.

Now, I will say that most people (in a reduced calorie situation) would probably be able to remove a larger chunk of calories from carbohydrate intake as compared to protein or fat. That's not to say carbohydrates are ELIMINATED. I'm saying you might cut out 300 calories of carbohydrates, 50 calories of protein, and 100 calories of fat daily, hypothetically.

Working out is good...but Atkins is not....

I personally have tried Atkins Diet....bought the recipe book and all that jazz. But in the end its not worth it...I lost about 15 pounds altogether in about two weeks...But the weight did not stay off....as soon as I got of the diet i gained it all right back....I suggest strongly that you do cardo and and just watch out for the calories you consume and not so much the carbs!

 BoNzAi

whatever happened to just listening to your body when you are hungry, eat what your body wants, and stop when full? geez...doing that keeps me at my healthy weight, and its the most fulfilling thing ever.

Some people have trouble figuring out if they are actually hungry or if they just want food (for their mouth). I try to figure out if it's my stomach or my tongue that's hollering. If it's the tongue, I'll either give the food a miss or have a bit of it (one piece of a chocolate bar, for instance). Sometimes those tongue cravings (just GOT to have the taste of something you like) can be real strong. Right now, my tastebuds are screaming for some coffee.

Of course it works!!! You're depriving your body of carbohydrate!!! Everyone woud lose weight on this diet, just like that OTHER diet that promotes the consumption of shakes (of course you'll lose weight on that diet too, 2 meals a day are liquid for godssake!!!)

Bottom line re Atkins diet (from observing friends living on it...)

Will I lose weight? Extremely likely

Will I feel good? Certainly not at first

Is it healthy? Hell, no

ryan, i am sure that you have heard of the bill phillips program, what is your take on that?

we did that once and lost alot of body fat but not so much weight in pounds but we sure did look good.

it has been too hard to discipline ourselves again to do that, the exercises and eating and all seems like too much work.

what do you think of a simple non adkins low carb diet? how many carbs a day do you think one should take in for weight loss?

thanks for your advice.

The weight that returns from low carb approaches is water weight.
RETURNS??
The reason people have rapid losses in WEIGHT is the shedding of stored water.
IN THE BEGINNING THIS IS TRUE.
THIS IS A GOOD THING, SO YOU DON'T HOLD SO MUCH WATER, AS I CAN...
Once you return to baseline eating habits (especially if you reintroduce a moderate amount of carbohydrates), the water will come back.
THAT DEPENDS ON THE TYPES OF CARBS YOU REINTRODUCE. YES, IF YOU GO BACK TO EATING THE GARBAGE BREADS, WHITE RICE, POTAOTES, IN A DAILY DIET YOU WILL...THE WHOLE IDEA OF THIS IS TO TRY TO RESTRUCTURE YOUR WAY OF EATING....

The flaw is in villifying one macronutrient. Neither fat, protein, nor carbohydrates cause obesity or alleviate it. Dietary fat/cholesterol was targeted in the 80s and a flood of low-fat diets came out.
YES, AND THE LOW FAT DIETS IS WHAT IS THE MAIN CULPRIT OF OBESITY HERE....
Protein was also a victim in the 90s by the vegetarian/vegan outbreak. None of these are sensible.
ATKINS DOESN'T PROMOTE A UNBALANCED DIET, HE ONLY HAS YOU LOWER THE CARBS SO LOW IN THE BEGINNING TO GET THEM OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM. AND HE PROMOTES VITAMINS DAILY ALSO, EVERYONE KNOWS OUR SOILS ARE DEPLETED FROM GOOD NUTRIENTS, AND SHOULD SUPPLEMENT IT.
A balanced dietary approach spread across 4-6 feedings a day is preferred.
AND YOU WILL GET THIS EATING HIS WAY.

Now, I will say that most people (in a reduced calorie situation) would probably be able to remove a larger chunk of calories from carbohydrate intake as compared to protein or fat.
OH, ARE WE THINKING HERE!
That's not to say carbohydrates are ELIMINATED.
ATKINS DOESN'T HAVE YOU 'ELIMINATE THEM' EITHER!
I'm saying you might cut out 300 calories of carbohydrates, 50 calories of protein, and 100 calories of fat daily, hypothetically.
AND THE MAJORITY OF 'ELIMINATED' CALORIES HERE ARE??? CARBOS!!

Not true. Once you return to baseline caloric intake, carbohydrate stores will replenish. It doesn't matter what the particular food source is....the body can make glycogen out of pretty much anything.

YES, AND THE LOW FAT DIETS IS WHAT IS THE MAIN CULPRIT OF OBESITY HERE....

I wouldn't say that. It's just another misguided fad that gets money from the unsuspecting public.

AND THE MAJORITY OF 'ELIMINATED' CALORIES HERE ARE??? CARBOS!!

Look at my numbers again. That's a 1:1:2 ratio of calories. I don't think you quite understand what the Atkins (and other ketogenic varieties) diet is....it requires a drastic drop in carbohydrate intake.

Body For Life? Total crap. The guy shoves EAS products down your throat constantly. It's all marketing. It's best to get away from such commercial sources of information and insipiration.
