kivabeach
I began smoking pot in 1994. I wasn't a regular user at the time, but quickly became one. It is now 2008, and i smoke pot atleast 2 times a day (and have for about 10 years now). I am addicted. I'm starting to think that my pot addiction has led me to make some bad choices in life. I have my degree, and am starting grad school next month. However, I think i'm kind of lazy. When i see all the things that others who are my age have done, I feel like a loser. I'm not the pothead who sits in front of the TV all day either, but I haven't really gotten anywhere in life yet. I quit every job i have ever had because I just hate to work. But do i hate it because I'm a doper? What are some suggestions for ending this habit? I have gone a few months here and there, but ultimately go back to puffing. I'm not sure I want to quit for good either...like a joint after a long week is like a martini for me. and i dont want to lose that. but how do i stop abusing it?
kizik
You need to go to Marijuana Anonymous. Pot is a strong opiate for many users, no different than hard drugs in several respects.
Desperado620
Yeah, like the guy with the Phish avatar is a great adivsor for quitting smoking pot. Kidding man, kidding. Seems to me that you're doing just fine. So what if you don't accomplish as much as some people, quitting pot won't make you more motivated. Also, no matter how much you achieve, someone will always be better than you. If you feel like a loser, and you think it'll make you happy, just put it down. I had smoked for many years when my H and I had to quit to pass tests for new jobs. The first few days cravings were rough, but they quickly subsided, and I never had any serious withdrawl symptoms. We both lost weight, but did not gain any extra energy that I recall. I was just bored a lot more. We picked it up again eventually, but it was easier than quitting smoking cigarettes. A lot easier. Try it and see how you feel. It's never too late to go back, the ganja gods will forgive you.
Desperado620
kiva, that last post was my bad. Not at all put up in the advisory function, more like a personal anecdote. Let me try this again. I studied marijuana law and history a lot when I first became a 'head as a teenager. I was big into NORML, and did a lot of personal research into things like the La Guardia report, the benefits of marijuana and hemp as profitable crops for farmers, and so on. (Did you know Utah was the first state to outlaw marijuana possession?) Anyhoo, in the course of my research I came across a particular phrase very often, called "responsible use." Responsible use of marijuana is a lot like responsible use of alcohol. You do not drive under its influence, use it around children or go to the job while or after smoking. Nor do you use it in excess, just like you wouldn't drink a whole case of beer to drown your sorrows, you don't smoke a whole bag at once to puff your troubles away, either. It's more like using a little on the weekends or during time off to relax, just like you would with alcohol. A couple I know did exactly that, and they said not only did they get more of an effect when they did smoke, they saved a lot of money. Since you said you've been a long time, every day smoker, maybe this is something you should try. I love this quote from Clueless, "It is one thing to spark up a doobie and get laced at a party, it is quite another to be baked all day." Try restricting your use to weekends and special occasions. This may solve your problem or not, if not, at least you're already halfway to quitting. You also said you'd quit before but started back, maybe this can be a happy medium for you. Now, hopefully this is some help. Good luck!
LoveLace
I know someone who has smoked everyday for much longer than 10 years..and now his job does random testing. So he's now a "weekend warrior" as he calls it, and he seems to be perfectly happy with that. Think about the months you went without. What was different about your life then? Was it much different than while smoking, did it make you feel more motivated toward things? If it was no different, I don't think pot is why you feel unaccomplished about something. But to think more clearly about your identity, it's better to quit anyway. And if it's not something you can do in moderation, you should quit all together, and you'll need support systems for that: individual or groups (that is, if you feel it's impossible to quit forever...enough education and counseling will teach you how to think differently..) Haloandhorns85
You say you feel like you haven't done anything with your life, but you have a degree! That's more than what a large percentage of people have! And you are starting grad school? Hell, you way past most already. I don't think you should judge your life on what other people have done. Everyone has their own timeline and benchmarks. I really don't think pot is the reason you feel like you've done nothing with your life. How old are you? Because age plays a big factor in the phases we go through in life. Maybe you are just in the self-discovery phase and are evaluating what you have done as opposed to what you want to do or what you thought you would have accomplished. If you feel you want to quit, then quit. You've done it before, you can do it again. However, if you want to keep on, then keep on. As long as your not high all day everyday, vegging out on the couch, not working or paying bills, or not taking care of your responsibilities, then I'd say you are doing pretty damn good. daphne
I don't necessarily agree with the laid back "oh well" approach by the other posters. I'm not sure when you started smoking pot, but it was a long time ago and puts you at least at 30+ for starting grad school. I'm wondering if you began a career or just a job, then decided to take the slow route to where you're headed. If you are serious about becoming motivated and changing your life, I believe you should quit pot. I don't know that you'll be able to cut back to recreational weekend use after all of this time. You said your'e an addict and you'd probably go back to daily use. I don't knwo that pot makes you unmotivated so much as unmotivated people do seem to gravitate towards pot. I guess it gives some an out or an excuse. You do not sound happy in the place you are. There's a lot of life that you are taking for granted and not taking advantage of by not doing much with it. Work, goals, achievement are things that build confidence and momentum in our lives. It provides a creative force and a purpose, if only to shape the best person we can be. It provides us with security, both financial and emotional, knowing that we are competent and self sufficient. As far as we know, we only have one life. I personally would hate to spend it relying on a crutch that skews my view on life, slows me down (or speeds me up), and prevents me from being the best I can be. That would be an awful lot of time down the drain that I'm never going to get back.

Tabatha
my boyfriend started smoking pot when he was 12, he is now 25. He quit cold turkey a little over a month ago because he's going into the army. He's actually happier off it. He's noticed he's a different person and does not want to be going back to it, for atleast now. He said if he gets deployed, then comes back for 3 months, he'll smoke a handful of times the first month, then clean out the last two. He was smoking pot everyday, multiple times a day when we first started dating. He says I helped him quit or atleast lower his number of smoking sessions. Now it's ZERO times a day, week, month! His words, "You gotta have WILL POWER, Yo!"
Mahatma
Smoking pot becomes a habit, not an addiction. Any habit can be broken. You will have desire to do it, because you enjoy it, but you will not suffer any withdraw symptoms after quitting. Just force yourself to quit for one full day. After that day, go for another, and so on. This keeps your mind only thinking one day at a time, instead of indefinitely. I hope you figure out what makes you happy.

Lol. But it won't be from posting on an anonymous internet forum where it isn't illegal to proclaim your habits. Besides, most cops don't care about pot. I know this for a fact. Had a cop in the family til he was killed last year. They don't really go looking for it. But if they happen to stumble upon you with it in your possession, then its really up to the cop. They don't have to arrest you for it. Did you know that you can actually only get a ticket if the quantity is under 4 ounces? If you got more than that, your usually a dealer and then they get you for intent to distribute...not just having the pot.
