Prodigal Princess
It's their life. If it makes them happy more power to them. Agreed. Not everyone is ambitious. I think that people like those car-washing dudes are probably happier than the rest of us out there competing in the rat race. They will also avoid attracting the gold diggers. I say, good on 'em. SeraBella
I applaud them for finding something they enjoy doing everyday. If they are able to support themselves (and families if they have them) then that is great. Also, if they are earning a decent wage at this and they don't have many other skills or formal education then they probably feel that they would have trouble making more money elsewhere, and not everyone is able to succeed at school. stillafool
I think they are probably happier without all the stress of corporate BS also. Not everyone wants to sit in an office, under fluorescent lights, breathing stale reprocessed air all day. I've notice the guys who work at car washes and they always seem to be playing and laughing. Thank God they love their jobs or who would wash my car?
solo_flyer
They are making $20/hr in a job that is extremely low-stress with low amounts of responsibility. Many people only wish they could be that lucky. I make considerably more than that, but sometimes I wish for that kind of simple life where you can just kind of glide and everything remains cool. carhill
I know a few gents who parlayed that kind of job into a car detailing business and have done far better (financially) than myself. As the last poster mentioned, there is more to life than money. I've traveled the world and enjoyed everything in life I've wanted to on the relatively modest income from my shop, doing what I love to do. It's not about what you make, it's how you use it. If I'm fortunate, someday I'll get to do it for free

Yeah, I agree. Not everyone cares about career or money. And the rat race gets old. I'm sure they like the simplicity of what they do and the lack of high responsibility. It's got nothing to do with their ability or intelligence - they just value different things than you.
JohnnyBlaze
Although it's not what I do professionally, I fully understand where they're coming from. Every 2 months or so, I'll take the car (or bike) to the parents' house (I live in an apartment - can't wash there) and do a full job on it, inside and out. It generally takes 3-4 hours to do the whole thing, but it's worth it. It's more than just the fact that my car/bike is now shiny and clean; there's something cathartic about it. I know you can take the cars to the drive-thru washes or the self-serve power wash places, but those are for people in a hurry (besides, I want to wash my car, not media-blast it). In order to do a good car cleaning, you have to be patient. You have to slow down and be methodical and do everything in its proper time. It forces you to disconnect yourself from the fast paced world for a little while.
quankanne
most of us just want to do something we can believe in and still make enough money to take care of practical needs (bills), with enough left over for fun. I got a college degree in journalism and make about 20 percent less than my colleagues who work for secular news outfits, but that's cool – I've got a lot more freedom with my job than they do, but best of all, I'm in an environment that is incredibly family-oriented. And that's been a god-send a few times when I've had to leave to care for my parents, who live across the state. it's not about money, but about being someplace where you know you're valued and you know you're making a difference. Because the ideal job to me is the one where you can say, "You mean you're gonna GIVE ME MONEY just to do something I love?"

Lovelybird
I remember Bible says "one hand toil and enjoy what it earns, is much better than two hands toil and don't have time and heart to enjoy them at all" maybe those guys simply like what they do, even take delight in serving others and they should be proud what they are doing, they have much time to bond with families, have time to enjoy what they earned. I think they are much happier than Donald Trump who judge who should stay and be fired they have many reasons to be happy because they know what true happiness is
