BannaBee57
Gardasil only protets against the 4 most common strains of hpv. The 2 that cause most types of cervical cancer and the 2 that cause most types of warts. There are still several other strains that it doesn't cover. They are just less harmful to you and aren't as high risk as the 4 that the shots protect agains. You probably got one of those strains. Lilke your doc said, I wouldn't worry too much, just make sure you get that annual check up and you should be ok.

Your body then works to fight off what it thinks is the actual disease, creating antibodies so that the next time the disease enters your system you are protected. Perhaps for whatever reason, maybe your body's immune system wasn't able to fight off that small/mild case you were given in the shot.
BannaBee57
Actually, I don't think Gardasill is a live virus. At least that's what I was told.
ShoeGirl
Just like BannaBee said Gardasil only protects you against 4 strains of HPV. There are over 100 strains of HPV, of that there are 15 or so that are considered hi-risk (the types that will show up on the HPV test that is run when you get tested at the doctor) I had the shots too, and I also have HPV now... it's actually pretty common, there is a pretty good chance that you don't have the strains that Gardasil protects you against, so that is a good thing since they are the worst strains. Read these, especially the CDC link, you will understand it a lot more http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/risk/HPV http://cdc.gov/std/hpv/
ShoeGirl
Actually, I don't think Gardasill is a live virus. At least that's what I was told. It's not live it's a recombinant vaccine so it's just the protein not the entire virus
Author xjohnsgirlx
Thank you for the replys =) its just really scary how your given it to protect you from getting it but then you get it (if that made sense) but i guess its just because their is so many different types? It is just shocking that i have hpv and it in some cases (although minimal) leads to cancer
quankanne
the doctor thought it was weird too but said i shouldn't worry frankly, I'd corner my doctor and ask what's not to worry about an HPV! when you started the series of shots, did anyone point-blank explain to you that you were protecting yourself against a handful of specific strains, and that there was still a possibility of getting the virus in some form if you did X Y or Z? my worry is that a lot of women are being misled by this shot campaign as some kind of cure-all, and that they DON"T need to be on their guard
Author xjohnsgirlx
Nobody said that i could get hpv from the shots. =( if i had known this i dont know what, like after getting the shots it hasnt made me anyless protective when it comes to sexual activity. The Doctor and nurse both promoted the shots said i should get them when i went for a normal checkup. But now that i have hpv its just changed me. Although its very common to get i feel bad and upset and i dont know how to explain it. Like im the carrier of which can be one of the major causes of cervical cancer! and im suppose to be okay with that. Maybe im overreacting but i dont want to pass this onto anyone (condoms dont protect your partner 100%) and then him leave get another gf .. and he passes it to her and then she gets a bad strain of it and get cancer...... am i just in the wrong mind of thinking or what
