audrey_1
I was asked to go camping this weekend by the guy I'm seeing. Really, it will be a 12 mile hike with a midway tent stay Saturday night. We've been seeing each other for a year. Why would you ask a date to go hiking/camping? A test? Can you stand each other unplugged in the woods? How well do you and your partner manage when there's no one else to depend on, etc?
Rooster_DAR
It could be a test, but I doubt it. He's probably trying to find out if his lifestyle fits with you. I took a date wade fishing for 4 hours in mud and rocks, she came out with battlescars and I was quite impressed.
Art_Critic
We've been seeing each other for a year. Why would you ask a date to go hiking/camping? I take it you don't like Camping/Hiking ? You have been seeing each other a year.. Why wouldn't he ask you ?.. I don't think it is a test.. I think he wants to spend the weekend with you camping/hiking.. It will be fun .. Roll with the punches
Author audrey_1
I take it you don't like Camping/Hiking ? You have been seeing each other a year.. Why wouldn't he ask you ? No, I like it fine! I used to go a lot for the reason of white water rafting before moving to a metropolitan area and just becoming disconnected from outdoor sports. Traded the trail for the treadmill. Why wouldn't he ask me? I don't know. We're not in a serious relationship, and he just finished this hike with his best guy friend two weeks ago. We've talked about how we spent most of our childhoods in the woods, so maybe he wants to see if I'm just full of $hit!
Art_Critic
Well then...I doubt it is a test.. maybe he is moving you closer to his circle of friends..
Author audrey_1
Interesting. Though we're not in a committed relationship, I always think it strange when his friend refers to me as "his girl." So I guess it's more serious than my date lets on. From what I understand, this tent we'll be roughing it in is small!

Author audrey_1
Make sure it doesn't leak Believe me, I've had my eye on the weekend weather report. A leaky tent could make things very interesting very fast!
Kamille
I love camping dates. I think they're the most romantic ever. In fact, I am camping tomorow night with this guy I just met.

Think so? I was wondering if this may be what he's thinking, as he's definitely a man more of action and less talk. He shows he cares by doing things like letting me practice my tennis serve for as long as I want and collecting the balls for me. But he's not so much on the kissing and hugging. Maybe this is his way of being close to me. Like he has other options when it's just the two of us deep in the woods...

Kamille
I do think so. I only go camping with people I hope to have a good time with. I wouldn't bring someone I thought was high maintenance to spend a night out in the woods. Not a test in my book. This shows he does like your company.

You just met. That's brave! But I suspect you should get to know the other very quickly this way. And find out a lot about personal habits and preferences. I'm actually very curious to see how he interacts with me while we're this alone. He can be quite aloof, so we'll see if he's more attentive to me in this situation, or if it's going to be "Woman vs. Wild." Did you come out stronger with this person, or not so much...

You've been dating for a year you say? And you've kept it casual this long?
Author audrey_1
We met while we were both camping with friends. You've been dating for a year you say? And you've kept it casual this long? Yep. We are both to blame. We're long distance, and we're both headstrong and independent, and we don't keep our communication consistent like we probably should. He is in pursuit of "financial stability," and I broke an engagement just over a year ago, so I'm not in any hurry. I truly enjoy his company more than anyone I've ever dated. Though I wouldn't tell him that. We're avoiding labels and just going with the flow. I don't want to become clingy because I do like him so much, but trying to allow progression at its own pace. We've known each other since we were kids, though there was a 15+ year break where we didn't see each other and were just living our lives. We reconnected a year ago and have been seeing each other off and on since. He said I have always been his biggest crush. Thinks I'm a "catch.":o I told him last weekend that I was going to back off, because when we do talk, I initiate it. He looked concerned and apologized for being so passive, then he asked me to go camping.

It's like they were more then happy to not have to do any of the relationship work... I avoid those situations now. Good for you that you were honest about it. It seems to have worked. Author audrey_1
Um, I'm married to her Ah, I see. Were you married AFTER you went camping? You initiated all the talk? Yeah I've fallen into that pattern in the past with guys I was dating. It's like they were more then happy to not have to do any of the relationship work... I avoid those situations now. Good for you that you were honest about it. It seems to have worked. We'll see if it works or not. I'm not really interested in changing him, only to strike more of a balance, if possible. He's always been very shy, and I'm not sure whether he ever learned how to reach out. I don't think he has. So when we have these conversations about what I need, I try to speak softly and without criticism, to hopefully let him know that he could have a more involved, happy life if he would let people in that care about him, even if it's just a little. With that open communication and with time, it will be revealed whether he's willing to try, or if I need to move on because he isn't willing to meet in the middle or just isn't capable. carhill
Ah, I see. Were you married AFTER you went camping? IIRC, we went camping about two months after we met. Got married about 16 months later. I bought the RV about six months after the tent experience. We still "rough it" (it's a slide in camper) but at least she's got a shower/toilet and A/C. Very cozy... I used to bicycle camp with panniers so none of my stuff was really set up for two people.

With all this romance talk, I'm looking very forward to spending this time with him. Watch it turn out that he conks out once the tent is up and he's inside.

Art_Critic
Do guys go hiking alone with a female friend? Well... in my book if I ask a girl to go camping and we share the same tent there will be some stabin going on in that cabin Otherwise I would bring 2 tents and give her a tent for herself. He asked me to bring my own blanket, but we're sharing a tent. I can't wait for Saturday! I'm excited about the hiking, too, but seriously, I'm worried he will be tired and fall asleep as soon as we're in the tent. He goes to sleep VERY easily. Oh well, I'll have my iPod full of good music, just in case.
