Addicted to pop Culture

Recommended Posts

I know this sounds kinda of ridiculous, but i am literally addicted to Hollywood Gossip. I watch the E! channel all of the time and frequent gossip blogs like Perez Hilton and TMZ. I also have a subscription to Us Weekly, and tend to buy People and Star Magazine as well.

What is my obsession with this stuff? I feel like I cannot go a day without checking up on the gossip, but at the same time, i dont know what my fascination is. I also feel like I am losing intelligence because instead of reading something of quality, i read these mags.

I want to quit. What should i do? I've tried in the past to give it up, but I always go back. I think i have low self esteem too...not sure if it came from looking at these mags or not, but I am always trying to be like the celebs.

What can i do?

Try watching something like Fox News and get familair with politics. That station

covers some "gossip"...but it's a good way to stay informed without letting your mind rot. I watch O'Reilly Factor and Hannity and Colmbs. I'm a chick but I think Megyn Kelly is hot. LOL She's smart, and she's beautiful. I wanna be her... :)

Read a book, try a new hobby.

Just remember that those people are just like you and me. They are flesh and bones just like everyone else. The only difference is that they have money.

Well, I'm pretty much anti-pop culture, so I might not be much help, but I can tell you what I do to occupy my time, since I'm clueless as to what is happening in pop culture. I couldn't name the majority of famous actors or actresses today and don't watch movies or TV much at all other than sports. I've been to the theater maybe 5 times in the last 10 yrs. and have MTV and the E! channel on parental lock in my place so no one can watch the garbage on there (you might want to try that ).

You need to find other things to do. Turn off the TV and the computer. I read, exercise, play musical instruments, search for new music to listen to, have become a decent cook, play sports, go to the beach, etc. You could probably try several of those to occupy your time.

I used to watch a lot more TV. When I was weaning myself off TV, I would go a whole week without turning on the TV. You don't realize until you do it how much free time you really have. You can waste hours of your life in front of a TV and learn nothing. Same goes with this computer. You should turn yours off now. ;)

Hope that helps.

Whereas I don't actually buy magazines and only read them while at the doctor's office, I got the question right about Brangelina's twin names at trivia one night. I then knew I had a problem. I check up on it at work in a couple of places. I'm not proud of it, and a few of my coworkers joke at my expense because I'm a little bit of an intellectual snob and I read that nonsense.

Give it up like anything else. Stay busy doing something more productive or rewarding. It's a fairly harmless addiction to have. It probably relieves stress since you're not reading teh daily news which is depressing and scary as hell. Find something else that relieves stress (exercise is a great addiction to have if you can find a sport you like.)

oh...and I'm not 16. I'm actually in my thirties!

Why are everyone telling you to do other stuff... If you like it.. who cares if you watch ALL the celebrities gossips...

I don't read celebrities magazines but I like to watch Entertainment Tonite, and I have the Star channel..

So what? I like to know what's going on in the 'rich and famous' world..

un très petit péché mignon.. ;)

Women are hard-wired by evolution to gossip. When the men were out hunting squirrels and pretended they just missed a mammoth honest, the womenfolk were using their advanced social skills to climb the social hierarchy, and secrets and gossip were a powerful weapon. You are similarly driven to find your rivals secrets, even though they are celebrities you will never meet.

Also, schadenfreude.

The Collector's post made me think: Maybe you should get involved in the local gossip where you live. That would be more exciting than the stars! There are probably plenty of juicy secrets and drama right in your neighborhood.

strange because.. although I watch some celebrities shows.. I dont' think this has anything to do with RL secrets and gossiping.. I don't care one second what's going on in my co-workers, or neighbour's lives.. I don't even know their name..... I don't even know if my co-workers (those who aren't married) are dating or not.. I don,t give a rat's azz what's going on in other's lives..

it's only entertainment.. like any other shows..

guilty here – I guess it's like a fascination with car accidents. You know: You don't really want to look, but you still do because you want to know what happens.

in this instance, I think this "habit" of following gossip has to do with the car wrecks some of these celebrities have made of their lives, like Brittney Spears, or genuine interest when babies are due to arrive (anyone else notice there's a high number of twin births lately? Lisa Marie Presley, J.Lo, Brangelina, Dennis Quaid? Must be something in the water!). And there are just some people I'm curious about because they look like they'd be fun to hang out with in the real world. Toby Keith comes to mind, as does Willie Nelson, the Garza brothers, Jasper and Mari Fforde ...

Pictures of Brangelina'snew baby are apparently worth millions - but I doubt a single man on the planet could give a rats ass about seeing them. What's the appeal?

But why do you (and a disproportionate amount of females) find it entertaining?

I don't know.. it's just entertaining.. why do guys love 'mobster' movies, fast car stuff... etc.. it's just there.. simple..

Talking about pop culture.. I tape all the Punk'd shows.. and watch them whenever I have a chance.. I love this show.. it's funny.. sometimes not so.. but I like the fact that some 'celebrities' are sooo down to earth in the 'every day life' ... we see their 'real' personality.. (well I know that in public they ALWAYS have to be on their guard).. but I'm thinking of George Lopez (if I'm not mistaken).. he was sooo cool with the whole thing.. he seemed to be such a nice guy.

I like Ashton.. gosh he's hot.. I envy Demi.. but I'm not so keen about his introductions on the show.. he has a tendendy to 'scream' a little bit too much.. but he's hooootttt especially when he wears a bandana... ooommm mammmaa...!

But why do you (and a disproportionate amount of females) find it entertaining?

I see it generally as small talk material to be used with people I don't know or don't connect with but need to pass the time with in a social manner. A lot of what we do in social situations stems from conventions, manners or other people's requirements. For instance, being under pressure to get along and make conversation with your date's best friend's partner. It's not always reflective of who we really are and what we most enjoy talking about.

Some celebrity gossip is very entertaining, of course....and I've noticed that men are often very willing participants in gossipy conversations about famous people....particularly where there's a sex-related story involved.

As for Brangelina's twins...I haven't seen any pictures, and can't understand the interest. The only discussion-worthy angle in the Brangelina family thing, to me, relates to some of the odd comments Angelina Jolie has made about her daughter Shiloh. That, and the fact that the two of them would choose to give a kid a name like Shiloh Pitt in the first place.

I already excersize...quite a bit actually. My parents practically raised me on this stuff. i remember being like 7 years old and going to the store on Saturday mornings wiht my dad to get breakfast bagels and stuff. he's always picked up People Mag and Us weekly, and so I've been doing this for years. The scary thing is that it is all i read!!! and the only channels on TV i watch are E! and Bravo (for Project Runway). My boyfriend hates it. And my friends dont understand why I pay attention to it. And frankly, neither do i.

My problem is that i just feel it rots my brains, and that i'm not doing anything productive to enhance my intellect. Why should I give a F&@# about Brangelina and the like?? I shouldn't but i just do. Maybe i'll go to Barnes and Noble and buy a book or something.

The news is too depressing. I have never watched it, nor do i read it. If news had happier more positive things to say, well then....i'd probably watch it.

I have a subscription tio Us weekly that i'm going to try and NOT renew in 2009. At least its a start.
