Trialbyfire
As previously mentioned, I sit in the middle of being totally self-sufficient and living at home. The question I'd like to throw out to members is, who's smarter, the person with loads of debt due to self-sufficiency or the person who's debt free with a substantial nest egg, who remained at home? Once again, I'm going to state that I'm part of the fiercely independent crowd, who didn't remain at home. OP, make certain you don't become a financial supporter for debt. These are his debts to take care of. You don't have the right to force him not to buy a new car but you'd be wise to watch and be cautious about his spending habits. If he's already shelling out $3300/mo in bills without a new car, how much more impact will it have with the purchase and why would he do this, with so many bills? It really doesn't illustrate a fiscally responsible person to me.
hotgurl
op, Will you move out when you have kids? It doesn't really seem fair to expect your parents to support you while choosing to be a single mother. Also are you planning on supporting your parents in old age? AS to TB question. I think neither is smarter a person who is self sufficant with a little debt would be the best option. I feel it is ok to live at home for a little while after college to get on you feet. What I don't like is the two poster who are bragging about owning their own house & having a new car while living of their parents dime. It doesn't seem fair to the parents esp since one poster doesn't even like their parents! Plus I never understood why people have the have new cars. It seems like a bad investment to me. Why not buy a used economy car.

Its my decision to live home why would she have anything to say about it!! ahahha Love, no there is nothing wrong with living home. Most of my friends tell me how lucky & jealous they are that I have such a close family. My brother didn't want to move far from home with his wife, so he lives around the block & so does my sister! Zicke, may be jealous of how close of a family i have as well!! Trialbyfire - Yes, I think we are smarter, the ones living home & saving, with the cost of living these days!! NO i will make sure that i don't become his financial supporter. I have no idea why he brought a brand new car when he has to pay $3300 in bills already, but at 4.5 months, its really none of my business yet. So i won't even question it. Hotgurl, no i will continue to live home when i have my kids & take care of my parents as well! I am not taking any money from my parents, i'm not living off their dime. All 3 of their houses are all paid off, so i am not taking a dime from them, don't know where u get that from. I could buy a brand new car, because i have a huge nest egg. Thats a PLUS of living home & saving so much!

So I do understand being proud of owning a house so young. It is an accomplishment but to me owning a house young while supporting yourself is more of an accomplishment to brag about. But Also I think there is a big difference between living at home at 26 and living at home at 35. I also understand not being able to live with your parents. I love my mom but I can't live with her. When the time comes where she needs more assistance I will probably build a house on our land instead of moving her into our house.

Do you pay for heat, hot water, phone, electricity, taxes, insurance, food etc...? If not then you are living off their dime. Bragging about owning my house...that's b/c not many 26 year olds where I am can afford to, so a 26 year old owning a house on LI is a lot more impressive than owning a house in say, upstate NY, where you could buy a house for $50k if you wanted to...granted, salaries are lower there as well. I knew a ton of people in college from places in upstate NY that were already owning houses @ 22.

Author MarieD
Lovestruck, Yes you SHOULD be VERY proud that at 26 you own your own house, REGARDLESS of how you saved your money. Be very proud missy!! Hotgurl, no i don't pay for electricity, taxes, food or anything like that because my parents REFUSE to let me. They won't take a penny from me!!! They always say that they love having me there & want me to save as much as i can for my future. When my parents are well off & will always have money to pay their bills. All their houses are all paid off. If they didn't OF COURSE i would take over & support them! I wouldn't have it any other way!!!!

You have no idea what type of houses people own or how much they paid for them.. Being in LI doesn't make your home any better or more expensive than the 2.5 million dollar homes down the street from me .. I may live in Georgia and you do get more for your money here but not that much more.

I may live in Georgia and you do get more for your money here but not that much more. You know how much someone pays for a house when you ask them...as long as they are not lying...plus I know what houses in some of those upstate towns go for. I am not saying there aren't places in this country that are more expensive than LI- there are- LI is not the end all or be all but it is on of the more expensive places to live in the country. Statistically, a lot of people here live at home and you can't try and change the numbers. Your right just b/c my home is on LI or worth more than someone else's doesn't make it better...but the numbers are the numbers.

BTW-I paid cash for my new car 5 months ago sweetie--nice try though. The last person I would be jealous of is someone in your situation, but whatever gets your through the day princess. You ARE living off of your parents dime, you just choose not to see that you are. Honey-I am very close to my family--I just choose to respect myself and them and not sponge off of them infinity. Your plan B sounds so mature---have kids out of wedlock and continue to sponge off of good ole ma and pa. You are mentally immature in your reactions and life outlook. it's like arguing with a 13 year old. Also, you are up all in his bizness by even bringing up his finances in the first place. We now know your guy lives in "jersey" is in finance (probably selling financial advice!), pays 3300 hundred a month in bills and he is purchasing a 2008 BMW he probably cannot afford next week. Most ridiculous things I have EVER heard!! No Maria--in your frenzy to prove how you got it going on, you failed, again to see the very valid point I was attempting to make. Most men that I know, would balk at dating someone who lived at home until their mid-thirties and beyond. You have no real world experience, so you aren't really up to making good choices dating wise. Yes, we all make bad dating choices at one point or another--but we learn from them...you do not seem to be. A woman who had to support herself, would have a clearer view of what denotes a good man from one who was a user, alkie, or whatever else you dated. Because based on her own life experience, she could more easily sus out the losers. One of the reasons I say this is because you were coming to strangers to validate whether or not you had a right to be concerned about some guy's financial decisions. It is like, you don't have your own opinion on the matter, because you do not know what it is like to have to worry about making the mortgage or rent, or the electric bill, or what bill to pay so you can buy food for the week. Again, your responses are that of someone 20 years younger than you are.

I hope that one day people pre-judge you before knowing you. Too bad you are so mean b/c I think what I have to say and the person that I am is a good one and you don't have all the answers, so maybe if you open your ears, eyes and heart, you may find that everyone in the world- me & you included- has something to teach and also something to learn.
