How good of a person do you think you are?

Recommended Posts

Like, "Stealing is wrong" because a certain element of trust in one's fellow human beings must exist (in general) for us to be able to live together in an overall peaceable fashion.

In a utopian society, the need for stealing would not exist. It would be redundant and a non-issue. But there are people starving in this world - and stealing a loaf of bread just to stay alive (while in "plump" view of others downing caviar) is in my mindset totally justified. As are many other things.

IMO, the grey areas are the real areas in life. Black and white is a far too exclusive and privileged standpoint from which to view the complexities of life.

Einstein was right. All is relative. And in that framework, I aspire to understand what I know can not be explained in universal truths.

I am so glad that you are in a philosophical mood. It beats talking about cheating and dating for sure!!!:)

Ha!

Amen to THAT, sister!

I don't know. I guess I'm just having that kind of day. Again, sometimes I think this makes me wishy-washy. Though I like to think that I am strong and steadfast in my beliefs, I find myself able to alter my opinion about many situations based on others' input and perceptions of the same situation...so I guess I hold to both the Universal Truths mindset AND the Everything is Relative mindset. :o

Yikes!

(more :o and a lot of self )

People do not only steal out of need alone. And what we own not always is just material goods.

A person might have pictures drawn by the hand of a loved one who died. (Going for the most cheesy example I could think of. :p) Another person might take them and hide them away. It could happen in a society where nobody knows hunger or poverty.

How can you prevent that? By making private property illegal? People will always feel the need to have certain things, things that are special to them. A society that makes this illegal is just as bad as one that fails to help their weaker members.

I would say 5

Mainly cause I have the capability to be a 10 or a 1, depending upon many factors.

Never a truer word spoken, in my book, anyway. AM, you are truly an ALPHA!!!

True.

Of course, we can never have a Utopian society, according to some, because of the inherent fallibility (second time I've used that word today! Bonus points...) of humankind.

So I am wondering where, exactly, this leaves us. You know?

But there are people starving in this world - and stealing a loaf of bread just to stay alive (while in "plump" view of others downing caviar) is in my mindset totally justified. As are many other things.

I am with you. This is the "gray" that I refer to. Is a hungry person stealing food a Bad Person? ;)

Black and white is a far too exclusive and privileged standpoint from which to view the complexities of life.

I like this quote! Thank you.

Yet...there are starving people all over the world.

For every action there is a reason. Universal truths are toys of privileged people.

The more I read, the more I wonder whether people are confusing personal bars and value systems, with universal bars or in self-defensive cases, bars being held for others to meet.

I am not negating this. I simply question whether theft is really only related to need. Your post suggested it.

No, it isn't. It was just a point I was trying to make. However, it is grounded in environmental factors. No, I don't believe that genetics explains everything.

I thought of some more "Assessment Criteria" to add to the list:

Fairness

Objectivity

Do you think that there are Universal Truths of Goodness vs Badness and Rightness vs Wrongness,

I am big into compassion and empathy. Understanding, acceptance, kindness. I have no aspirations towards 'selflessness'.

For me, "bad" and "wrong" only exist in our third dimension, and "Universal Qualities" are the higher vibrations of love, peace, harmony, forgiveness, and such.

Excellent thread topic!

This is very subjective...

I know I am a good person.. but for others, here, I'm a very bad, evil, person.

I have a huge heart, I am extremely generous with the ones I love.. with my time, my money, my energy.. etc.

I know I am a great mom, a great friend to my 2 life-long friends, a good sister to the only brother I speak to..

I have to say that I know myself now more than ever. I have no patience with parasites, liars, hypocrits, wimps..

Bottom line... what's most important is that you are 'comfortable' with who you are.. it's that simple... who cares about what others think.

Does the ability to self analyse for the purposes of time management come into the measures of whether someone is a good person or not?

For instance if someone posted say 32 posts a day here wouldn't you think that they would have analysed themselves to a point where they realise that they have no real life?

Lizzie,

I see you in exactly the same way as you see yourself! I would love to have you as a friend. Truly, I so understand where you are coming from. More people on this board would do well to take your advice.

Actually no. Perhaps they just have a boring job? Like me. I'm a secretary that answers the phone and helps customers when they come in, which is rarely. I am still going to school in the evenings, which is why I don't post at night. My real life happens at night. :)

You could be right, or it might mean they wish to either share their wisdom, learn something, or maybe just be argumentative for the sake of arguing?;)
