counselor appointment: i can't quite state what my problem is

Recommended Posts

hi guys! i have an appointment with a counselor today, and i'm unexpectedly nervous about it - because i can't quite state what my problem is... so i'm afraid she'll say - well, if you don't know whats wrong, we can't help!...

Also, I'd like to talk about some things, but couselors aren't there to give personal advice, right? So should I bring it up?

what are your experiences with counselors like? Is this an advisor, or a mental health doctor, or ...

thanks,

Hi yes,

what sort of counselor are you seeing -- a career counselor? What was your purpose in making an appointment? If the service is not specified as being about jobs or something like that, then I expect it's a life-issues counselor, in which case bringing up personal problems is exactly what you're supposed to do.

And you don't need to know exactly what the parameters of your problem are. That's what the counselor is trained to do -- to help you unearth and highlight things that you want to examine and possibly change.

Good luck, hope it goes well.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you are seeing a psychological counsellor. I love to see a good one. They are always great to talk to and offer good insights into dealing with problems.

You need not be nervous. Just tell the counsellor you're not really sure why you're there. It's OK to be that way. The counsellor will pick up that you are in a funk, confused, maybe a bit depressed, maybe in an existential crisis, whatever... Maybe you just aren't happy with the state of your life right now.

On your first visit, the psychologist will ask you a number of questions to get to know you better. In doing that, he/she will get a much better idea of exactly where you are emotionally. Perhaps you must feel a bit empty, a bit unfulfiilled. Just say that to him/her.

A counsellor is there to serve you. Just the fact that you made the appointment is an indication that you have a need to become more emotionally/psychologically balanced. Maybe you just need some tips on life in general. No matter what, look at this as the most golden opportunity you will ever have. Seeing a counsellor is a wonderful experience....like getting a massage on your soul.

Don't even worry that you're unsure why you are going. Just walk in the door and play it by ear. I promise you, this will be a great experience. Let us know!

Yep, it's a psych couselor, sorry I didn't specify that above.

I just came back from her office... woof! I was shaking by the end of the hour, I must say. Still am. Shaking with nervousness and excitement... The lady did a great job of talking to me & identifying what goals to set.

I'm a bit skeptical of trusting her with my psyche, but she called something i said very "kafka-like", and that just made me feel like she'll really understand my problems.

But, I finally feel like there's a way out of my circular self-analysis ... !

Can't wait to see her again in two weeks,
