I think that when the present becomes the past, it only matters because it's a continuation of the past. Meaning that if the past happened and then that relationship or those feelings had an end-date, then they stop mattering so much. But if the present becomes the past and the relationship and feelings continue into the present, then the past does matter because it's still riding the coattails of the present. It's when the past loses its grip on the present that it all falls apart. Those are my thoughts anyway. Let me know if you have questions on this or need clarification in any way....
