konfuzd
The list of 599 additives approved by the US Government for use in the manufacture of cigarettes is something every smoker should see. Submitted by the five major American cigarette companies to the Dept. of Health and Human Services in April of 1994, this list of ingredients had long been kept a secret. While these ingredients are approved as additives for foods, they were not tested by burning them, and it is the burning of many of these substances which changes their properties, often for the worse. Over 4000 chemical compounds are created by burning a cigarette, many of which are toxic and/or carcinogenic. Wood burning stoves, fireplaces have chimneys which are designed to remove most of the pollutants. If we start attaching chimneys to cigarettes, I'll be all for them. Besides, people aren't walking down the street and crowding around doorways with their wood stoves, making me walk through them.

I think we kind of missed my point. I'm not saying the smoke isn't offensive, or that it's good for you, or that you should have to breathe it. I'm simply saying that cigarrette smoke isn't particularly more dangerous than other types of smoke at similar concentrations in the air. It's not nerve gas guys, it's just smoke, and should be treated as such. I'm not for smoking cigarrettes around non-smokers. I'm against hysteria, and exaggerrated propaganda meant to demonize a segment of the population. Those are dangerous mentalities to have, and all too common. The fact that food additives tested for safety by consumption are approved for use by a burning product is very interesting though. How many of them are actually commonly used, and to what purpose, would be the next question.
Diamonds&Rust
But IMHO, the "second hand smoke" hysteria has been primarily invented to demonize people who choose to smoke. Yup. It's okay to lie if it's for public health. More importantly, it's okay to be an ******* to an entire group of people if you justify it this way. For every smoker who is careless about their exhale, there's a dozen people who will do the obnoxious fake-cough when they walk by. They're usually on their way to their automobile, muttering about air quality and carcinogens.
melodymatters
Gotta enjoy the hypocrisy ! Back in NY, they outlawed smoking by bus stations, never mind the huge BUSES emitting god knows how much carbon monoxide as they idle there. 2nd, example : took a friend to the ER. They had signs staing how smoking was not permitted ANYWHERE on the grounds, including your own CAR. Of course they were doing MAJOR construction on a new wing, 30 ft from the entrance using deisel powered back hoes, cranes etc. I was just WAITING for someone to knock on MY car window and complain about my Marlboro ! C'mon folks, hell yeah, it's bad for the individual, but can we say " Witch hunt" anyone ?
Diamonds&Rust
I remember getting a ticket outside a hospital. I was smoking with about four other people, most of whom were terminal. The reason I was cited? The patients were smoking pot, which was perfectly alright according to state law.
