westernxer
Very cynical yet humorous, from Bill Maher's irreverent point of view. Movie will piss off a lot of people, but I don't think it will get much distribution outside of New York and Los Angeles. If you see it and you're a believer, take it with a grain of salt. If you see it and you're a heathen (like me), don't let your disbelief drive you to arrogance, since we're all in this together, whether we like it or not. It does raise a lot of questions though about faith combined with tunnel vision and self-denial, which has proved dangerous throughout the course of history. The last few minutes reminded me of the concept behind the Year Zero album from Nine Inch Nails... I think Trent is on to something. Anyhow, I wonder if this will generate any media coverage. Lots of juicy material to choose from, and I'd love to see the pundits go at it.

quankanne
as someone else points out, i highly doubt it'll screen here a bible belt city like the one I live in! It does raise a lot of questions though about faith combined with tunnel vision and self-denial, which has proved dangerous throughout the course of history. that is an interesting comment. If we accept that there is no God, that we are our own authority and that to commend religion is to force A's morality on B, who's to determine what people have "done in God's name" is actually wrong? Frank Peretti had a good point with that in his book No More Bullies.

Do you live in a place where they censor your entertainment? I still dont get why it wouldn't be shown... I would ponder a guess that perhaps you are a devout republican that resides in a blue state. That must be a luxury that I don't know. By all means, come down and see what it is truely like. Yes, things get banned and we...sigh instead of getting outraged. I'm sure this movie will be played for one or two days in our metropolises and quickly moved on. I have yet to see any local advertisements for it though. The same could be said for other perceivable contraversial media and movies venues. Our blockbuster is not the same ...nationwide. Our last news stand that carried ALL the papers was just put out of business.
underpants
Darn'it Quank, we should run together. Like Clairee and Weezer. Or Thelma and Louise. :lmao: You want reform? You want mavericks? Holy all that is wrong with PMS. Let's get this ticket going. A tampon on all your problems. ...no winking though. That is silly.

I really like what Bill Maher has to say- also love John Stewart and Joy Behar. I'm sure Bill is going around in the film asking people the same questions that got me kicked out of Sunday school:cool: Isn't it produced by the same people that put out Borat? disgracian
Isn't it funny that in the midst of all this, Christians are the ones who claim they are persecuted and hard done by. They are indeed an endless source of epic lulz. Cheers, D.
Eve
we're all in this together, whether we like it or not. I like your base rationalisation. I do not know who the person is who you have mentioned. Could you possibly provide a link? I cant believe that in some places this film will be censored. I am against censorship of books and films... and yes, I am a Christian. Anyhow, I am glad that you are honest enough to state your beliefs without putting others down. Looking forward to the link. It's not playing in the Bible Belt area I'm in either. I don't think it's so much censorship as a fear of some sort of public outcry. The theaters here know the majority of the public here will not watch and probably create a fuss about a movie like Religulous.
fral945
Probably the same reason you'll never see the music video "She Left Me for Jesus" on CMT.

Whether you are against censorship or not, it exists thanks to our primarily conservative society. It's ludicrous that anyone could sensor anything at all, much less something that addresses such a profound conundrum such as religious beliefs. I'm not familiar with Bill Maher, anyone care to enlighten me? Cheers!

It's ludicrous that anyone could sensor anything at all, much less something that addresses such a profound conundrum such as religious beliefs. I'm not familiar with Bill Maher, anyone care to enlighten me? Cheers! Bill Maher had a late-night McLaughlin-groupish talk show called Politically Incorrect than ran for about a decade in the 1990s. He'd bring four guests on, usually of widely disparate views, and they'd hash out some topic. I think he himself is known for having basically libertarian/liberal views (meaning he's about as socially liberal as they come, but does support more limited government in the financial arena). He's an odd guy - he supported Bob Dole in 1996, Ralph Nader in 2000, anyone but GWB in 2004 (=Kerry) and now Barack Obama.

He also got his start as a stand-up comedian, and his humor trickles down into his other work, like the movie we're discussing.
Jilly Bean
Yes, and he also got his show, Politically Incorrect, cancelled when he made some really offensive cracks about 9/11 (right AFTER 9/11). Up until that point, I thought he was fabulous and entertaining, but since then, he's really fallen out of favor. Although I am not a Judeo-Christian religion, I can see why this is a movie that would not be welcomed in certain areas. Offending someone's religious beliefs is very dicey territory, and some people REALLY take this very seriously.
Trojan John
He's got a show called Real Time now. I've seen clips on youtube. I will probably BT Religulous since it most likely won't even come here on dvd.
Eve
I dont understand the comic value of the title 'religulous?' Is this supposed to rhyme with ridiculous? Anyhow, I watched the trailer for the film and didnt find the gentleman at all funny. Its a shame because it did say that the film is from the maker of Borat, which I did find extremely funny indeed! This man is too impersonal for my tastes and just reminded me of a Politician. He also has a terrible hairstyle. I dont think this film would make even 50p in the UK because the culture is SO different, definately not a market breaker.. Personally, I think that this person will only alienate himself in the US. He just seems highly intolerant and most importantly is not comedically funny. Or maybe I simply dont get it. I dont mind religion being open to jokes. In terms of American comics I quite like that Silverman girl in terms of comics whose jokes are just over the top. Cant remember her first name. She is a proper comedian, SO funny!!!!! I would pay good money to see her live!! Dylan Moran is tops for comedians who make fun of religion over here! I find all of his stand up routines hilarious! but I am a real fan of comedy!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wl_Lacg5m3g
Eve
Just a quick note - it is Sarah Silverman. I just remembered her surname and she can be found on Youtube along with everyone else in the world. I will not post a link lest I offend someone. I see comedy as a skill in which someone makes fun of different characters which exist in society. I do not advocate racism, sexism nor any of the other bad 'isms'. Some comedians are self serving and I dont find them funny because they really are not joking at all and I dont think one has to be a rocket scientist to know the differences in approach. This 'religulous' person is a self serving agent in my opinion. But thats my opinion..
