Great idea, but no one would go for it

With all the complaining I've heard from people who say it's so hard to find a date at all (let alone finding someone you get along with), I would have thought people would do the obvious... start their own meetup groups in different neighborhoods. It would be sort of like a drop-in singles group, or like something meetup.com would have had going if they weren't a pay site... that way, say you're feeling alone and bored, all you'd have to do is log on and find out where the group is meeting, and just drop in. It would be so universal, anyone who tried the crazy idea of starting a dating service would be laughed out of business.

Only one thing is wrong with that picture... it makes sense, and nothing about looking for that one person is supposed to make sense. For some reason, we like making it difficult for ourselves, and we resent it when some Mister Spock person tries to make it sensible. It's the one thing in our lives that shouldn't make sense... imagine if I went to a store and I didn't know what I wanted to buy, but all sorts of groceries would leap into my cart anyway. Or if I went to a car dealer and expected a car with all the options I wanted, to start itself and follow me around the lot.

People seem to be afraid of making their lives easier, and it isn't limited to our love lives.

I went on one Boss at work with an idea how we could save up to $2000 a year on fuel costs, and simplify the distribution process so the job could be done by one person instead of 3. His response? "We can't afford to pay the $700 it would cost to implement the idea". What part of *saving* $2000 did he not understand?

Then, there's Linux. I've been running it exclusively since 2003 with no problems. When a person complains to me about their XP computer issues, I point out to them:

*Linux is stable. I've run computers 24/7 for over 6 months without a reboot.

*Linux is unaffected by Virus, trojans, and other Malware.

*Linux will run just fine on their 5 year old computer and hardware.

*Linux, and all its associated software is FREE.

Their response? "I don't want to learn a *new* operating system", something they'll have to do when they switch to Vista anyway.

Invariably, this person will go out and spend about $1000 on a new Vista computer and upgrading their software and peripherals, then *STILL* complain to me when it acts up.

Don't give up! sometimes it just takes the rest of the world a little while to catch up with you.

hat way, say you're feeling alone and bored, all you'd have to do is log on and find out where the group is meeting, and just drop in.

dis, you're a pretty sharp cookie, I like this idea! If it can work for people with hobbies or ministries, why not with the dating world?

I say go for it, implement something in your neighborhood cafe or bookstore or even church, if that's your interest. There are bound to be others of a like mind, and the worst of it would be that you've made new friends to pal around with.

... as long as they're not terrorists :laugh::laugh:

Most people (women in particular) are ruled by emotion. Love is an emotional experience, and it is easily ruined by sound logic or common sense. They will start and end relationships on a whim.

Spock has sound judgment but he lacks the emotion and sex appeal to have people follow him. Perhaps charisma.

I think the only really accepted method is through a network of friends (acquantances). If you aren't a part of the "in" crowd, you are out of luck.

Hmm... well, maybe my writing can help me out. I already have one novel in circulation (go to Amazon and search for 0979947944), and my divorced friend suggests I might meet lots of women if I can get in for a book signing. BTW it should appeal to both sexes... men will like it for the gadgets, women will like it because the main character is a young women's libber.

There are also story lines on my HD for about 12 romance stories... I'm living proof that 41-yo virgins suck at writing romance, but all these are stories that turn out bad.:p Someone would read them and think, "man oh man, this guy has led a strange life".
