Diet Pills? Dangerous? Effective?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I just wanted to know if anyone here has had any success, or adverse effects, from taking diet pills.

Im trying to lose some weight, not all that much. Im 23 years old, 5'3" and I weight about 128 pounds, and I would like to lose 10-15 lbs. I eat relatively well, I suppose my biggest problem is beer, Because I like to go out on the weekends.... But who doesnt!? :p

Annnnyway. I exercise 4 days a week, about 45 minutes of cardio, then some circut training. My weight is very stable, Ive weighed the same for the last 7 years or so... Now, I realize Im young, and my metabolism will undoubtedly start to slow down... this is why I want to get into an exercise routine now!

Now, my problem is this: Ive previously tried the exercise thing for months at a time, with little to no results, and this time I really want to shed the pounds, so Im debating integrating diet pills into my routine, only, Im hesitant because Ive heard horror stories about cardiac arrests, dehydration, uncontrollable bowels.... eeep! None of which Im interested in! ;)

Has anyone had any success and/or horror stories?

First of all, don't forget that any form of circuit or cardio exercise builds up muscle. Which weighs more than fat.

Secondly, sorry to say it, but alcohol is the bigget weight-gain factor ever!! Stop with the beer, I'm afraid!

Thirdly, don't use pills.

Side effects aren't worth it.

Well, I used Alli at some point and it's the greatest weight loss pill I have ever used (I have tried many, ashamed to admit :o). It works fast and excellent with stubborn places like tummy.

I'll agree with Geisha. Cardio does nothing other than put more weight on me. The only form of exercise I do daily is take steps.

I was afraid someone would say that! :p

Thanks for responding guys!

Ive heard good-ish things about Alli... So you didnt feel an increased heart rate, dizziness, or have any other negative side effects from it?

Im not too upset about the actual number of pounds I lose, I just want to shed a few and tone myself up a little more! So, Im going to keep up with the cardio and weigt training.

Plus, it helps me to eat better, sleep better, de-stress, and it gives me more energy!

But isnt it true that if you stop taking these diet pills people have the tendancy to gain all the weight back and then some!?

Diet pills are a waste of money, they really are. Nothing will replace a healthy balanced life (eating healthy and exercising)

Diets work for the present, not for the future. You've got to change your lifestyle if you want permanent effects. Just be more active and you willl lose the extra pounds you want to lose.

There are so many types of diet pills out there but most of them contain chemicals that are very harmful in the long term to your body, just look at the caffine content of those pills it can be upwards of 250mg which is just asking for a heart attack when you get older. They put all the caffine in them to give you a feeling of energy, it also increases your heart rate which in turn will burn more calories.

I've done the diet pill route before- and as much as it did work, there are always side effects.

I'm 5'8 and weigh about 118... I also have a love of beer, but I keep it to the weekends mostly now and I balance out the calories in the beer by cutting back on other calories during the week. It works for me. 12 Beers over the weekend is about 1200 calories.... so I lay off on the carbs and other bad foods during the week.

I used to take a product with phen-phen in it, until I discovered it was causing strokes... Not worth the weight loss!!!

My advice is to consult a personal trainer. They can design a worthwhile program with diet and exercise that is suited to your own needs and help achieve results.

I am in my later 30's and my metabolism hasn't changed too much. I am 30-40 lbs thinner now than I was in my 20's. What has changed is that I am a cardio hound now.

PS.... I forgot to mention WATER!!! Try drinking lots of water!

When I do drink beer on the weekends, I have one pint, then have a water, then another pint.

Keep up with the water everyday. I always kick start a diet by amping up my water intake.

Weight loss pills are a scam. Products like Hydroxycut Hardocre are basically just Caffeine. I've heard many times that people use it for energy... why not just spend 8 bucks on 200mg of Caffeine pills? You get like 100 of them.

Save your wallet. The best way to achieve EFFECTIVE weight lose is to change your eating habits. The word Diet refers to temporary. Make it a lifestyle. Technically you don't need exercise since 80% of weight loss will come from eating habits. Having a planned exercise routine will speed the process up though.

Sites like Menshealth.com and bodybuilding.com are also great support areas. Check out the forums... members are always willing to help.
