moimeme
OK, I need a talking-to. I'm not good at telling myself off and I'm great at rationalization so I need someone objective to lecture me. At present, I am in a situation where I have neither family nor work obligations. My sole responsibility consists in keeping my two fur companions alive and well. I have friends and volunteer work and stuff like that but in terms of health and well-being, it's me and my fuzzies. This leaves me the liberty to organize my days any way I like. What I like is to work with ideas; to find information and synthesize it; most of it having to do with improving life, health, relationships, etc. I use the information both for myself and to pass on to others who have questions and to plan future projects. So you'd think that I, having amassed vast quantities of such information, would have the good sense to live a balanced life. Not so. I do pursue my passion - which is the above. I strongly believe that my role on earth as a human is to be of service to my fellow humans and I do what I do to that end. However, I have the greatest difficulty persuading myself that I should not do that to the exclusion of doing things for my own benefit. The things that fall by the wayside are the everyday mundane things - house tidying (stuff is clean but messy), being sure to eat real well, keeping on top of my finances, etc. I do tend to my mental well-being; I do lots of things that give me peace and contentment. Actually, perhaps stress avoidance is one of the things that leads me to neglect the other stuff! Anyway - tell me off. Give me more reasons than I have yet come up with for why I should add more of basic, mundane, maintenance stuff into the mix so that maybe I'll finally sit up and take notice and do them regularly rather than periodically getting my life in order only to have it fall apart again from neglect as I turn my attention back to the other stuff. So have at me, if you wouldn't mind!
Ryan
Do it and I'll take my shirt off for you. Honestly....this shouldn't come from other people. Will must be your own for your life to be your own.
yes
if you're happily getting along without certain mundane tasks, and the fact that you don't do them doesn't harm anyone, what's the problem here? -yes
Tony T
You seem pretty cerebral and fairly evolved spiritually. That type of person skips the little crap for the bigger picture. I think that's what you do and it's OK. The Buddha didn't pick up after himself, Abraham didn't sweep his place, Jesus wasn't particularly concerned with minutia, Einstein forgot where he put checks for large sums of money, etc. The greater a person, the less trivia they concern themselves with. There is no sense in trying to force yourself into a place you don't belong. Follow your bliss and screw the rest. Live life on moment at a time and notice and feel that which is about you at the moment. You can never be troubled if you do this because problems never exist in the moment, unless you are standing in front of a Mack Truck.
Author moimeme
Do it and I'll take my shirt off for you. Zowie! Best offer I've had all month! Will must be your own for your life to be your own. Wasn't asking for will, just for some of the arguments you folks might use to persuade yourselves to take care of the mundane tasks that I could borrow since mine aren't very persuasive. Tony - thanks! Nice of you to say. I take your point though, needless to say, it hadn't occurred to me to pattern my living style on the lives of those great souls; just my life philosophy. And to all - ROTFL! Fat lot of help you people are Here's me trying to convince myself there's good reasons to take my head out of the clouds and be a somewhat practical person every now and then and nobody thinks I ought LOL. Ryan
Best offer I've had all month! You think I'm kidding? I can make this happen for you. :c) Wasn't asking for will, just for some of the arguments you folks might use to persuade yourselves to take care of the mundane tasks that I could borrow since mine aren't very persuasive. I don't have arguments. I just do it because it needs to be done...which I call will.

Helly
moimeme - it sounds like you have your priorities right! I think it's perfectly human to have difficulty motivating yourself to do housework/ mundane tasks and, as one of best friends always says, "If your house is spotlessly clean, tidy and dust-free, there's something wrong with your life!!" - well, that's our excuse for rarely getting around to doing the house-work! The only thing that motivates me to clean my house is the fear that I or, even worse, that a visitor to my place might catch some horrible bacterial/ dust-borne infection or get food-poisoning if I let things get too scummy. Anyway, if I was a single girl, I'd be asking to be third in line for Ryan...
Author moimeme
"If your house is spotlessly clean, tidy and dust-free, there's something wrong with your life!!" Well, I do have a fridge magnet that says "Dull women have immaculate homes"
yes
while i usually manage to make quite a mess within several days, i do clean up my two rooms every Sunday, for several reasons: - if my desk is cluttered, it's harder to concentrate - i go through the clothes that's all over the place to see which should go to the laundry (and hang up the rest) - i dust/vacuum so i don't start sneezing, and let some fresh air in - just cuz it's pleasant and that's about all i do... takes no more than an hour, and gives me a piece of mind. If you also make a mess in the kitchen, my advice is to have a rule - no eating until the kitchen's decently clean - if you're cleaning while hungry, you'll do it QUICKLY, believe me! Bathroom is also THE place to make a mess... but there, i'm lucky, b/c a cleaning lady does it =) my 2c, -yes
Author moimeme
If you also make a mess in the kitchen, my advice is to have a rule - no eating until the kitchen's decently clean I used to have a rule: no kitchen unless there's a dishwasher. Unfortunately, this place is way too small to install a dishwasher. So the dishes air dry (more hygienic) but that takes a while. At least I have managed to persuade myself to do the dishes by hand - truly my least favourite of all chores. I'd iron someone's clothes every day if that someone would do dishes in return. Ah, well. I spend too much time at my 'cereberal' stuff to go find me a dishwashing assistant. a piece of mind. hee hee - were you missing one? Yes, I suppose if I were to hire myself a cleaning lady, that would also give me PEACE of mind - but that would mean I would have to organize the piles of literature such that she could navigate LOL. Part of it is that I live in a TINY place. So I need a lottery win, job, and/or man with one of the foregoing so I'd have more space LOL. Maybe I'll just write a book and get rich and being rich will solve all my problems
Ryan
and/or man with one of the foregoing so I'd have more space LOL. I thought all I had to do was come up to BC and get pampered? Now I find this has all been one big ruse to get at my money.
Author moimeme
Yeah, that would be me - money over relationships. Then again, if you take your shirt off AND do dishes, I'll pamper you and iron your clothes no matter how little money you have
