JePam
i am currently unemployed and looking, but i starting to think that its a waste of time because i keep getting either ignored or knocked back. I worked for a large supermarket company for over 5 years and i have tired to go back but i keep getting emails back that i am not qualified enough for the position, even though i worked in nearly every department while i worked for them. So is anyone else finding it hard to get a job these days??
Arise_Serpentor
Whats the job you are not qualified for?! What degree did you get in college?! I see many many job openings where I am.

Sorry but that's the problem. Maybe you could take this time to get an education or some sort of trade to make yourself desirable to employers?
mental_traveller
Are you trying smaller organisations too? Corporates usually want a degree for positions above the basic entry level. Smaller places run by some businessman, who often doesn't have a great educational record himself, are more tolerant and will value hard work, thrift, experience and loyalty more than a paper qualification. Maybe time to pound some doors, look at trade publications, business contacts etc. Get yourself out there, introduce yourself, prove you are better than 99% of candidates and will work your nuts off. That always gets attention.

To a certain extent, a degree would help a lot. However I have one, I work for a TV station doing advertising now for 4 years...and I am looking for a new job and I can't get one either. It's just a bad economy now, bad times. Recession, lots of people are getting laid off. I wholeheartedly believe though that this would not be so bad as it is now if a democrat was in office...but that me for ya and my crazy opinions.

betterthandead
Well the thing is that Republicans starting losing control around 2002-2003, I can't see how the failing mortgage/overpriced housing properties correlate with a certain political party that had power at the time. I wouldn't think Democrats are honest people loving types since they're paid the same amount of money and most of them take under the table contributions. californiadreaming
I have been unemployed for 6 months and working less then 20hrs for a year and four months. It is hard, damn near impossible. If anyone has any work in Los Angeles / San Bernidino counties please let me know.
sb129
Well yes, but there is always going to be someone else who will work harder...and has a degree...the degree ultimately being the OP's downfall. Oh please. There are thousands of jobs out there that don't require a degree. Jobs that are still very important to society.
spookie
I'm never going to get a degree just so to refrain from being a statistic for LS's bunch.
spookie
OP.... I think there are jobs out there. Certainly less than before, but people are still hiring. I think you need to get creative, though, with how you go about looking for one. Don't just fill out applications... go band on some doors, make some borderline-inappropriate phone calls, follow up - after you get rejected. And then again. In my experience stubbornness and ingenuity pay off.
aamber
If your willing, maybe considering internship somewhere.. Gets your foot in the door of a career you may be interested in, and when it comes time to hire sometimes before hiring outsiders, company looks at those who have spent time volunteering and learning the ropes.. Thats how I got the job I am at now. I work in Marketing and I don't have a college degree. But I volunteered with the company for 6 months, they were impressed by my work and hired me on full time.
