Extreme tiredness and fatigue

Recommended Posts

Wow I dont know what my issue is today I am so tired I feel drunk, and I have been stumbling around I was actually thinking when I was driving that if I got pulled over I would fail a drunk driving test.

I have worked 72 hours in the last 7 days but that is not unusual for me, the only thing that is different right now that comes to mind is the bad air quality due to the fires in California. I am not overly concerned about how I am feeling but I have to work a 12 hour shift tonight in the Emergancy Room and I am having difficulty concentrating, calling in sick is not an opption. Anyway I really just wanted to get this off my chest, I hope tonight goes ok.

Ahhh edit... Make that working 13 hours tonight, they just called me to see if I can be in charge tonight, which means I have to go in early and make up peoples work assignments.

hey K why don't you hook up to an oxygen tank at work since you sound deprived?

It may give you a nice little boost.

Did you say you are working in the Emergency room tonight?

Why not get checked out...!!

Uh, yeah - you work in an ER, and you've got access to B12 shots, and you're asking us for advice? It seems you really are disoriented...

How much time do you spend in the gym?

It depends, I ran for a mile today and then did an hour on the weights. Anyway I figured out whats different in my life right now that probably brought this all on this girl at work has been bugging me to go out for drinks with her so I finally did the other night and I drank a lot shots of patron and beer anyway that is not normal for me and I think I was just really dehydrated. It hit me at the gym when I was struggling through my workout.

Dehydration can hit you hard.

I am guessing a combination of lack of sleep, a hard workout, and some heavy drinking factored into this.

If you are going to work out, make sure you get enough rest, and eat properly.

For sure, I do take care of myself and work out quite a bit I always eat healthy and drink plenty. But drinking alcohol is not something I do often so I completely forgot about it until it hit me when I was working out and I started feeling sick and so on. I do work hard and long hours but I think I get enough rest 75% of the time.

Getting enough rest only 75 percent of the time is NOT nearly enough! See if you can bring that up to 98 percent. The body needs ample rest in order to rejuvenate itself for each new day.

Its 75% because there are days where I work the night before and I have to pick my kids up from school so I only sleep about 5 hours and then I have to help them with homework and make dinner, I really dont see anyway around it unless i win the lotto or something :)

So do your patients.

Screw working out... how about: if you're going to accept responsibility for having people's lives in your hands, get enough rest and eat properly? Is that not flat out a condition and expectation of your employment, just as much as it would be an airline pilot or other "life-critical" worker?

Bitter much? I work out after I work not before so if anything suffers its my workout. I take very good care of myself and I have never made any life-critical mistake, I am one of the go-to guys at work when others dont know what to do. I was just saying on this particular day I was feeling terrible when I woke up, but fortunately I was doing much better by the time I got to work.

Sorry dude - I was a little harsh. I'm glad it worked out for you and I can't imagine what it must be like to save a life - you've got my respect there. It was just a little jarring to hear you say that basically you were having trouble functioning, but that you had no choice but to go in for a 12-hour shift in the ER, and you "hoped tonight would go ok." I hope for you what I hope for anyone - that you find a way to balance your life so you can eat, sleep, and exercise well enough so you can perform at your best when you need to. Isn't that the same counsel any good doctor would give a patient?

I do balance my life, but like I said just this day in particular I was feeling way off and I didn't even understand it myself. Saving a life is such a routine thing now that I don't think much about it (its my job and I do it and you just do whatever it takes in the moment), that is until the person in question comes to me and says wow you saved my life and then I break down and I will cry or whatever; I dont know its a real reality check to have that person there in fount of you talking to you. I just treat every person that I see like they were my own family (which they are in the big picture of things).

Shoot I am even having trouble putting into words how this makes me feel, I guess what it is is I don't have an ego about what I do and I would do what I do for anyone, but I just don't give it much thought until that person in thanking me and then I normally will cry with them and be humble. I guess if a person lives or dies really isn't up to anyone in the ER its up to the big man upstairs.
