Is this wierd or what?

Recommended Posts

Completely off the point here. As weird as it may be to eat in a bathroom, It must be even weirder to have to use the bathroom, With nine coworkers eating right beside you. Man talk about performance anxiety

Why would the women who work there think you were a bad person for wanting to enjoy a clean lunch room?

Herd mentality, Routine. "We do it becuase it's always been done that way." Not that it works, or that people even enjoy it, but they continue doing the same things over and over... never getting ahead, never improving their lives.

I started working at a new company a few months ago. All my co-workers are male. I'm the only woman in the department. I would like to fit in, but fact of the matter is... I'm a good worker and I'm there to get paid. End of story. I'm not going to be buddy buddy with these people. They aren't my friends. I work - I get paid.

You have a couple of choices at this point. You can stick with the herd, safety in numbers. Or eat in the cafeteria. You'll get noticed if you do that, but the up side of it is you'll also be seen as someone who isn't afraid to act when something STUPID is occuring. It's stupid to eat in the bathroom. Don't go along with it just because it's always been done that way.

I have to question how long this has been occuring. When will that one person finally take their lunch to the lunch room? Who will be the one who says "You know what, I hate smelling your shyt while I eat, I'm going to the cafeteria".

Right On Walk !

It takes just ONE to be brave enough ( not speaking in my case because I would have stirred up the dining room ALONG time ago , not eating where ppl shyte ! ) to go in there and sit down. Its almost like , Men deserve cool stuff in the dining room and women deserve the toilet..

NOT !

mmmm where I worked there were CS reps and there were lenders. There were two different tea rooms. CS (customer service) reps could go into the other tea room but you just wouldn't. Because lenders were all dicks who hung out with management. One of the started a conflict... guess who would get the ass... not a lender. Same at all functions... lenders got preferential treatement.

In an employment situation, there are things to rock the boat for and others, that just aren't worth it. It's also reliant on how much time you've spent with a company, your investment/worth to the company and credibility level with everyone.

Start rocking the boat in such a visible fashion, in the first while and you're going to be labeled as a troublemaker. If you're willing to put a lot of time and energy into the company, then go for it in a couple of years but do it in a less confrontational manner.

Now if this were a non-work environment, say a restaurant, then go for it!

Well, that's two different tea rooms, not a cafeteria and a bathroom. It's not unheard of to have different areas for management and staff, although that's less common these days. But a bathroom is in no way anything but a bathroom, not a designated and appointed eating area.

And it doesn't answer the question I was curious about. You stated that if the women ate in the cafeteria they would be asked to do things. What things are those?

Yes, I would defintely raise some questions as to why that's where they eat/take their breaks at and whatnot. I know I'm definitely curious as well.

That is strange.

only thing i can think of is that the women don't like the men drooling over them during lunch, or that the ladies like to chat away from the guys.

i'd eat in the cafeteria a few times to see what happens

Personally, I would refuse right from the first day to have my lunch in a bathroom, those people are not normal... How did it ever occur to you to agree to this ? What's next ? Drink out of the basin...?!?

Who cares what those women (or men) think, as an employee you are entitled to a lunch break and a suitable facility to have your lunch.

You said yourself you would not want to stay to work there long-term if this is a given situation. Well, the only other option is to stand up to it, it is not like things could possibly get worse...?

Wow. That sounds like an awesome lunchroom! If I were you, I'd jump right in on that...Forget those ladies who eat in the bathroom!!! (I seriously cannot believe that.) Maybe your female co-workers are the girly, gossipy types that don't like to do normal things like play games, and be competitive.

I think you should just go and eat in that awesome cafeteria...I bet you would earn alot of respect with your male counterparts...I mean, maybe what your company looks for is team players, and people who are confident in their abilities. It's not uncommon for companies to have things such as games and other activities for their employees...It helps to break the ice, relieve stress and agression, encourage team play, and encourage competition.

Be wary of the women, tho...If you happen to get in good with your other co-workers, they could resent that...But that's not your problem...It's theirs, and I think if you see yourself as an equal with everyone, it will gain you much respect in the workplace...

I mean seriously...Maybe they don't like that lunchroom cos they suck at foosballl...There's many perks to being "one of the guys.." Esp in the working world where we get our toes stepped on all the time.

Let loose, kick some can in foosball, and show those women how it's done!

I know this is a bit late, but I thought I should mention this since I didn't read anything that explicitly stated it. It seems to me that the women in this workplace have been intimidated into eating in the locker room, perhaps due to some extreme sexual harassment that occurs. I think this is what the woman you asked meant when she said that they can "be themselves" in the cafeteria.

I immediately thought of the movie "North Country" with Charlize Theron when I read the original post.
