A mother found guilty of arranging her own daughter's abduction was described by police as 'pure evil'. I find this an over-used phrase. What kind of adjectives do we reserve for murderers, terrorists or genocidal governments?

The daughter was later discovered alive and unharmed, btw.

How bad do you have to be to qualify as 'pure evil'.

I think had that mom also sanctioned someone to kill the kid just because she could (i.e., not for money, not to get her out of the picture, but because she wanted to kill her kid) ... that would qualify as pure evil in my book.

however, in this case, I think Mama made a dumbass, selfish move having the kid abducted, and not much more.

I think the term "pure evil" is subjective.... The Officer describing the mother thus has probably not come across such callous disregard for one child by its mother, so this is how he measures her character, through his perception.

Is it on a par with, say Dr. Josef Mengele?

Probably not.

But it's comparable with anything that officer has probably seen for himself, up to now......

We are all born, "Pure Evil".

Each and everyone of us is pure evil, doesn't matter if your a cannibal or a pope.

It's my belief that only Christ's blood can cover our, "Pure Evil" so as to re-gain a relationship with the Father.

A local woman near here was just arrested after one of her three adopted daughters was found by a neighbor wondering down the street dazed and bruised. The other two little girls were later found by the police dismembered and stored in her freezer. They had been dead for quite some time, the freezer moved from house to house each time the woman changed her residence. If the third one hadn’t escaped, none of them would have ever been found.

That’s why I don’t believe in a place called “Hell” where ‘pure evil’ resides --- I think the darkest of souls already walk among us

This is when I want to enact "pure evil" on someone. Nothing like a quick bullet to the head of anyone who can do this to children. I think I could pull the trigger too.

I don't think in many absolutes but I think adult sociopaths are all pretty vile people on the whole.

All these adjectives when applied to humans are subjective and often wrong, IMO there are no devils or saints, all are in between (and we should never use our value system when judging non-human behaviour as we aften seem to, how can a cat be evil ?). Whilst I agree that in this case the press and police were over simplifying and exagerating, I think that given the unconditional love that most parents have for thier children any act by a parent that causes harm to thier child, especiially if deliberate, must rank as near the top of the scale. ps to Moose, how rude to say that I was born evil, you haven't even met me !

According to the Bible, we are all born "in sin." I think that twisting this into a blanket condemnation of all mankind being born "Pure Evil" is a form of evil in itself.

As for defining what is "Pure Evil" in a person, I believe that only God can really make that judgment (although that doesn't stop any of us from being able to form our own opinions!!). But I've heard about a few people who come pretty damn close to it.

It is scary and yet...it's not. If it ever comes down to that, I guess you have to weigh how it would mess with your psychy or not.

It's one of those fine lines people have to draw for themselves. It makes me think about soldiers, who go into battle with the "greater good" in mind v. soldiers who just enjoy killing. The end result is the same thing, where people die and yet motivation is completely different.

To deny that we have savagry within us, I'm not certain is realistic. To not want to allow the savage to dominate, can sometimes create that inner conflict.

Also, you see people laying emotional waste to people around them on a daily basis and yet condemn those who go to war for the "greater good" or believe in capital punishment. Who really is the savage or "pure evil" in this example?

I would not say it is evil, just misguided and extremist, and easily refuted by the abundant examples of selfless actions and love shown by ordinary people all the time, day after day.

Humanity is a mixed bag.

Cheers,

D.
