Should we wait a couple of more years?

I'm fixing to be 21 and my boyfriend is 23. We've been together for 5 and a half years (4 and a half if you count the year we broke up when I went off to college). I broke up with him and got a great deal of dating experience to make certain he is the one for me--though I already knew. I had friends & family that though they think we're adorable and love us, were a bit worried since we had only dated each other and were so young. I've also learned how to be independent and live on my own in my own apartment. I've lived with roommates and have lived on my own to learn the difference. We are not engaged, but I have a feeling he will propose on Christmas Eve while we are on vacation alone together. I know him well, and KNOW he is going to propose. He has a wonderful job and I am half way finished with college. I love him very much and know he is the one..but I think(especially considering how the economy could be in a few months-years down the road) that it'd be best to stay engaged until I finish school so we aren't just living on his salary--though it is a good salary it'd be better i could support myself as well. I know he is the one and think being together with him would be heavenly--I just want to make certain that we're financially secure before doing so. What should we do? Go ahead and get married since we love each other or just wait it out 2 more years?

I think your argument for a longer engagement makes perfect sense. Plus.

You wouldn't believe how much time and energy it takes to plan and pull off a wedding! Especially a really "nice" one. Not to mention the expense and STRESS...especially if you want the "perfect" one .

None of which you'll need in your last years of college, needless to add.

I get that you know your guy, and that you are certain that he will be proposing in a couple of weeks.

But. Just as long as you'll be perfectly okay if that doesn't happen. He may WANT to, but he may not be into longer engagements. And he may have thought about all these reasons for not getting married sooner, and he may end up deciding to delay the proposal (rather than put out the whole idea of a longer engagement.)

That is, just as long as you'll not be disappointed if it turns out that you were reading the signals of his desire to marry you correctly, but just got his timing off.

So I take it he hasn't proposed yet? Have you discussed it at all?

Personally, if you are not done with college you should not even be getting engaged. Engagement is a very stressful time (I've seen friends turn into Bridezillas) and still finishing college will probably take a toll on you. Of course it could work out too.

You are the only person who can decide if the time is right for you two. I personally feel that you two are still young and waiting 2 years wouldn't be that big of a deal.

How do you pay your rent and other bills now?

Thanks for your advice! I'm very excited just thinking that he may propose, but you are right I probably shouldn't get my hopes up just yet. It's fine if it doesn't happen, as I said I will always love him and waiting a couple of more years might be better because I would have my own job instead of mainly depending on him to pay off my student loans, etc.
