He'll pay for everything and put you up in your own hotel room to boot but with his work it would be hell for him to leave, is it wrong to compromise and agree to go there to visit first?

There's nothing wrong with that. Talk to him. Make arrangements. You guys can probably work something out.

If he comes to you, you are stuck entertaining him if you don't like him. I do online dating, and I always go to their neck of the woods on the first date. That way I can leave whenever I want. I got stuck with a loser that drove an hour to see me once- and I couldn't get rid of him. We were at a restaurant in my neighbourhood and he got drunk and wanted to stay over. I took off out the back door.... He didn't know where I lived- which was a cool thing. He's paying for your visit and hotel? This is your first meeting?
