My final books of 2008 have been all about reincarnation. I have yet to research as fully as I would like the ties ascribed to Christianity within these books so please bear with me here. Essentially, I have been reading that the Bible was amended rather dodgedly to hide that we reincarnate. For someone like myself who has no desire to return to this Earth in this form this has been a disturbing read. I have found some aspects gratifying in the sense that via this philosophy people have to return to Earth until they are somewhat enlightened.. and so there would not be a permenant hell sphere to contend with. I suppose I usually feel compassion and want to see God in this light more than a God who is full of vengance but still I do have faith in Gods decison making..

What do you know about reincarnation? Do you believe in it?

The books I have been reading have been authored by Sylvia Browne who is a psychic medium.

Thoughts please.

Regards,

Eve xx

My personal beliefs are that you will continue to be reincarnated in various forms depending on your past life until you reach enlightenment on your own.

I remember now.

He's the dungeon master from that cartoon "Dungeons and Dragons!"

Magic Hat guy was the best of course.

Most Buddhists ascribe to Re-Birth, not reincarnation. The concepts are quite different.

I have understood that you are reborn until you are enlightened. Re-birth is similar, however you do not retain things like personal characteristics or ideas, only your mind is the same.

Once you have reached enlightenment, you are reincarnated upon death.

I could be vastly wrong though.

You are.

According to Buddhist premise.

Christianity really *can't* support reincarnation, because it'd blow the whole Jesus being resurrected thing to pieces.

I personally don't believe in reincarnation, because while I'm a huge fan of recycling, there's something just icky about trying to apply that to a soul!

however, I think reintarnation has some merit ... you know, coming back as a hillbilly? Because there seems to be a whole lot of 'em and I don't think breeding is responsible for all of it!

Christianity DID ascribe to Reincarnation, and it was precisely because of the Jesus thing that the Ecclesiastical Powers quashed the idea and called it heresy.

Early references to reincarnation in the New Testament had been deleted in the fourth century by Emperor Constantine, when Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire.

In the sixth century, the Second Council of Constantinople ruled that reincarnation was a false belief punishable by persecution and death.

At the same time, the Church and the Roman Emperors knew that the concept of prior lives would weaken and undermine their power over their followers since it would give these people too much time to achieve salvation... the threat of a Judgment Day and punishment by an angry God at the end of one's life, worked a lot better to control the masses.

Judaism has allowed, as a side element, the idea of reincarnation, but to my knowledge it isn't explicit in the Torah.

Enema- Yes my pic is of Dungeon Master. Dungeons and Dragons was the best cartoon ever made!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_&_Dragons_(TV_series

Presto was the magic guy.. loved him! My favourite characters were Eric (the Cavalier) and Presto. I just have one more series to purchase.

Back to the whole reincarnation thing.. Now I remember in Scripture it mentions that Our Lord came to a point whereby He remebered who He was before - (when He was in Heaven) Could it be that we also have a stake in such an experience because Scripture tells us that God knew us from the beginning of time. Hence, past life regression may have some credibility (?)

All in all, I have decided that I believe the accounts given by within the books I have read ... especially the concept that we choose and chart with God what we intend on learning in each incarnation.

Yes, there is a theory that Christ preached reincarnation and it was covered up. The Gnostics believe this and there are many Gnostic texts that you can research.

If you are really interested, I recommend books by Brian Weiss, a Columbia University educated psychiatrist specialising in regression hypnotherapy who had some rather surprising things happen to him in the course of his work that made him come to believe in reincarnation.

I actually think that reincarnation is a complicated subject. If you really start to look into the literature, you will find a lot of writing that suggests that time and space are illusionary. In other words, we do not live consecutive lives, but parallel lives, and we dip in and out of them in a fashion.

The concepts are fascinating. I hope you continue to explore.

Where am I wrong?

Once you have attained enlightenment, you pass into Nibbana. It is a matter of your choice, as an enlightened being, whether you return to human form to aid others towards enlightenment. It isn't automatic.

The Buddha did not reincarnate.

Tibetan traditions recognises the existence of Tulkus, but they do not say that the tulku is a re-born person, rather that a previous Lama has chosen to manifest within the essence of another being.

So the Dalai Lama is a reincarnation of the XIIIth Dalai Lama. But he is also Sonam Gyatso.

I guess that is another reason one shouldn't hit a mouse with a hammer, since people who are mean and nasty may return as small, furry animals. No matter what they did the last time around, they certainly don't deserve that fate.

So maybe I killed Hitler? I thought I detected some anti-Semitic squeaks just before the deathblow.

Everything is transitory, Nothing is permanent.

Not even reincarnation.

How will the thread be re-born?

Maybe this thread is already 'invitro' ready to be born into another incarnation? Hence, Mr collector has died but he held onto the trace memory of this very thread and it helped him to 'go towards the light?'

.... Maybe not?
