Is fear of divorce enough reason to not ever marry?

Recommended Posts

I tend to believe that you should not operate your life based on fear.

But I also hate gambling. With the statistics on marriage and divorce being what they are, doesn't it seem like more of a gamble than anything?

Although I think soserious gives an overly gloomy view of marriage, I have to agree with many of her points. Yes, fear of divorce is a valid reason. It's a huge financial gamble. I know too many people that are essentially working miserable jobs just to pay child support and alimony to their spouses. If I have a 50/50 shot of having to do that by getting married, then no thanks.

I think the better question is what do you get out of being married that you can't get out of long term cohabitation? I haven't heard many compelling arguments. Seems to me the rewards aren't much different, but the risks are far greater by getting married.

How do you know when its the right person?

You don't really know. For me, the best thing is to find someone willing to sign a pre-nup that says if we gets divorced I won't be taken to the cleaners financially.

Hell I seriously considering moving to Texas since that's where what's left of my viable family (mother and sisters) live.

What with the pending lay-off's at work, I might just chuck it all and put a "Gone To Texas" sign on my front door! :D

"People from Texas don't care if the sun don't shine!" :p

Gunny, Texas is a GREAT place to be. As a matter of fact, me and one other LoveShackian are partying hard together this weekend as we speak!

Come, you'll love it

Always had a good time in Texas. Women there love my Alabama Rhett Butler Southern accent, And I've always had a fondness for Lone Star beer over that of others. ;)
