Am I overweight at 5' 4.5'', 122 lbs?

Recommended Posts

How do you feel? How do you look? Are you exercising? Do you overeat or eat a lot of junk foods? According to the charts, you could probably stand to shed 10 pounds or so but it really depends on your build. There is nobody in the universe more qualified to tell if you need to lose weight than YOU!!!

You aren't overweight. You are about ideal. Just try to maintain your current weight and you will be fine. IF you want to get more in shape, just start excersising. But you aren't overweight.

Uh....that's a tad misleading.

There is nobody in the universe more qualified to tell if you need to lose weight than YOU!!!

And that's definitely misleading, considering we encourage people to seek medical professionals for many physiological situations. I don't think we want to endorse the position of people being their own doctors.

ANYWAY, that's not overweight. I don't know the particulars of your bone structure and inherent muscularity, but it's highly unlikely you would be at an unhealthy level of bodyfat.

Where did you even get the notion that this would be an issue?

well it depends.

they tell you for every inch over 5'0 you should add 5 pounds to a starting weight of 100. so you should be a little over 120 which makes you fine.

BUT...i have found that most people look their best about 10 pounds below this. your choice.

ARe you willing to help yourself and change some of your habits? I know it is so hard to do something like that whether it is changing the way you eat or how you exercise or whatever it maybe. But, you have to want it so bad to loose the weight that you will do anything to get to that point of thinness. Except for starving yourself of course. But, seriously, you have to WANT A CHANGE and be willing to exercise, eat properly etc., to help you get ahold of your weight.

Now, I am going to give you afew suggestions. ONE: GEt slim fast and drink it for breakfast, watch what you eat, and walk and a steady fast paced(try it for a month), and see how you look. I have a story. My mom is a big boned women. Would not say she is fat. But, that is what she did. She drank slimfast and still does, eats okay, and also walks for an hour and a half at a fast clip. Now I am not saying this because she is my mom, but she looks great. She lost alot of weight and looks good.

You can try that, or one thing I suggest is going to the gym. I know it is a hard battle. But you have to just walk in a gym and be willing to join. Of course go check out a variety of gyms, but with you signing up and going maybe try 4 times a week for an hour and a half then you will become addicted. Now, I can't relate to you as far as weight goes, but the first time I went to go to the gym, I was very nervous. But just do it. SEriously, it has given me alittle boost in my attitude and toned my bod. So, I am just trying to help you out, but really it is all up to you.

You can sit on your a$$ and do nothing about your weight or start a diet and exercizing. AT least try it for a month of 4 days of exercizing and watching what you eat, and do the slimfast thing for breakfast. It will help you out.

I am currently in the process of becoming a nationally registered dietitian and I love these questions which make me use what I've been learning for the past 5 years!

Lil Lola mentioned a formula called the Hamwaii formula. For women it's:

100 lbs + 5 lbs for each Inch over 5'

For men, it's 106 lbs + 6 lbs for every Inch over 5'

You would subtract or add 10% of the calculated value depending upon whether you are small- or large-framed (leave unchanged if you have a medium frame).

There are several methods of figuring your frame size, but your personal estimate should suffice.

So, based on that singular piece of information, your weight falls within a normal range. Other factors, such as body composition (proportions of body fat and muscle and water) determine weight.

Do remember, though: A healthy weight for Your Own Body is more important than a generic calculation of an average range. Follow a healthful diet which includes a variety of fruits and vegetables (five half-cup servings are recommended), whole-grains, minimally refined foods or whole foods whenever possible, lean meat, poultry and fish, legumes and nuts, as well as low-fat dairy or soy in balanced portions and engage in regular physical activity for cardiovascular fitness.

Your weight sounds perfectly fine for your height. I don't know your eating habits, but if you're eating well and exercising, you are very likely quite healthy, and that should be the priority.

You were doing pretty well with the dietary matters.

engage in regular physical activity for cardiovascular fitness.

Then you went into exercise. This advice is vague and misleading.

Maybe it was vague, but how was it misleading? I don't try to dole out advice on topics I do not have a good understanding of. Exercise science is not my forte, but if it is yours, by all means, advise!

The relationship between exercise, general fitness, and cardiovascular health is a somewhat complex discussion. I may have covered it elsewhere, or it may serve as a good topic for a new sticky thread.

My point is, regular activity is not necessarily exercise, nor will it necessarily promote cardiovascular health.

The dietary stuff was pretty good though.
