Milk can help girls lose weight, study says

Recommended Posts

This is the second study I've heard of that concluded that milk can be a positive factor in weight management.

To add a bit of anecdotal evidence; I'm a lifelong milk drinker. All of the women on my Mom's side of the family were overweight at least to some degree (not obese by any means but definitely overweight by probably 30 - 35 lbs). Me, I'm well within the weight range for my height and I've never had a 'flabby midriff'. I don't diet either but I do make it a point to not eat unless I'm hungry and to stop eating when I'm full. Anyway, this study is very interesting!

MONTREAL -- Weight-conscious adolescent girls have a better chance of losing their flabby midriffs if they ditch soft drinks in favour of milk, a preliminary U.S. study presented at an obesity conference suggests.

A study of 323 adolescent Hawaiian girls found they lost weight and abdominal girth by consuming just half the U.S. Food Guide's daily recommendation of three dairy servings.

"It suggests that consuming more dairy would help you have a slimmer middle and that it can also help you with maintaining weight," Rachel Novotny, chairwoman of the nutrition department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, said yesterday. "But you need to watch the soda intake."

cow milk was never intended for human consumption

Oh, really. What about hydrogenated oils? What about meat? What about fake 'whipped cream'? What about chocolate, coffee, and alcohol? What, in fact, ARE we meant to eat? We aren't built like carnivores (no claws nor powerful muscles nor tearing teeth) so I guess it's fruit and berries and vegetables uncooked with no sauces and water to drink.

Come to think of it, if humans were meant to fly, they'd have wings. If they were meant to communicate with people who don't live in their village, they'd be telepathic. If they were meant to wear clothes, they'd have been born with clothes on. Cripes, we're in BIG trouble!

very interesting ... I adore dairy products: cheese, ice-cream, milk, and I have a very flat abdomen despite doing nothing to earn it.

And it's a bit of an exaggeration to say that drinking milk/eating dairy products does no one any good. Human bodies often lack the enzymes to digest the specific sugars found in cow's milk, true. But the other nutrients milk contains are very much needed and used by our bodies. So if you're one of the lucky ones whose bodies can handle dairy milk, sounds like it's even better than we thought!

Hooray!

All right, you people. If I vanish suddenly one day, either my computer has croaked or I have - from inhaling my my snack due to all this silliness. Tony and Beth, in particular, have been dangerous to my continued existence lately though you're no slouch either, Cindy.

Now, maybe I'll go read something heartwrenching - at least until I finish my coffee! (cough, sputter, hack)

  • 2 weeks later...

This really has nothing to do with increased dairy intake.

It's about the decrease in caloric intake due to the decrease in soft drinks. The postulate that an increase in food consumption leads to a decrease in body mass is inherently false. These kinds of studies are carefully couched to try to make a causation out of a correlation.

I'm not opposed to dairy...I chug plenty of the white gold. I just wouldn't put any credit into this hypothesis.
