AlektraClementine
Wonder if any of you loveshackers are ex smokers? I could go research threads but I have a TON of work to do today. I have quit twice in my life. Both due to pregnancies. When I was finished nursing each child I went right back to smoking. My boyfriend is also a smoker and wants to stop as well. He is working right now doing a stretch of gigs thru March. After which time, he wants to make a plan to quit smoking. I do to. My concerns are these. -I don't know how to stop other than when my body is responsible for the physical health of another. That is a very tangible idea and it's a no brainer. -I gained a few lbs due to BC that I was on (am now off of) and I am trying to keep my weight in check. Afraid quitting will only make this harder. -I REALLY enjoy smoking my sweet sweet cigarettes. I don't want to give them up. How did you guys do it?
Weary30
I quit smoking 5 months ago. I used Champix (Canadian brand, Chantix is American Brand). I smoked for 15 years, and I live with smokers (can't do much about that atm lol..hate it though). I found that on the medication I was a bit paranoid and anxious...but that could of been a side effect of not smoking rather than the medicaiton itself. Yes I gained weight...and though I am doing things to correct that atm...when it came down to it I thought gaining a few pounds was the lesser of the two evils.
citizen67
Read the easy way to quit smoking book by allen carr - he lies, its not that easy, but its not as hard as you think either. You don't have to quit while you are reading it, so take your time finishing it, and then decide if you want to quit. Set a date, and just do it - I was very "foggy" for maybe 3 days, and then that ended. I replaced cigarettes w/ sugarless gum and water- if you pay attention to your caloric intake there is no reason you'll gain weight if you don't replace cigarettes w/ food - b/c I can do exercise I could not have done while smoking, I am thinner and fitter then when I smoked (and not adding new smoking wrinkles to my face!) Lizzie60
I quit cold turkey in 1993. so it's been almost 16 years now.. I was with my first 'ex' then.. and he never quit. It didn't bother me.. I was doing it for me.. and my children. I gained weight.. but later lost all of it and even more. There is no miracle cure.. you got to do what you got to do.. if you gain weight.. so what? you will eventually lose it.. no big deal... Think about your health.. you will feel soooo much better.. it's not even comparable. In my case, my skin changed, my hair doubled in volume and became shinier.. my breasts became huge.. I became much more healthier. It changed my life.. I can't stand smokers anymore.. I would never date a smoker.. in fact.. I hate smokers.. No one can do it for you... it's hard but it's definitely do-able..
blind_otter
I watched my father die a long, slow, horrible, painful death from lung cancer. He had his left lung removed first. After that it took about 7-8 months. In the end, my mother - who is 5'2" and tiny - could carry him in her arms. The cancer didn't just eat away at him, it caused him so much pain that no amount of painkillers could put a dent in it. It was horrible. Everyone in my family is still suffering from his loss - 2.5 years later. I loved him so much - we all did - and now he is gone, and to think that if he hadn't smoked cigarettes he might have been able to meet my son.... I quit cold turkey after that. I couldn't smoke another cigarette for the rest of my life now. I hope that, for your childrens' sake, you can quit - so you can be in their lives for a long, healthy, happy time. Cigarettes are evil, nothing good comes of them. And they are full of some seriously noxious crap, not just straight tobacco.
