[edit]*My title meant to say "StayING fair~skinned" ha~ so much for proof reading* [/edit]

LoL but anyway, hey everyone~~

So basically, what I'd like to know is how do I stay fair~skinned as I do not like to be tanned. Everytime I go out into the sun, I wear SPF 85 [a pretty high # huh!] and it feels like I am getting more tanned since my skin feels very hot while I'm out in the sun. I look noticeably darker and I don't like this at all.I usually wear spaghetti strap clothing that exposes my arms, and long pants. I've heard that wearing covered clothing such as light jackets and long pants will help me to stay fair~skinned but I like to wear clothes that are somewhat revealing. [LoL I know, I can't have my cake and eat it too. I have to probably either wear more covered clothes and stay lighter or wear sexier clothes and become a lil' darker. Grr]. I also go running outside 4-5x a week and I know that that is probably contributing to my tanner appearance :-( Does anyone have any other suggestions for Me? There must be some other ways to maintain or to become more fair~skinned. I haven't considered bleaching creams since I don't know how those work or if I even need them but I guess, in general, does anyone have any advice?

I also have to mention that I was born and raised in Hawaii, and I'm still living in Hawaii and I hate tans/becoming tanned/being tanned, etc lol. I wasn't always like this. I used to like tans but quickly got out of that phase [it was a 2 month phase & I'm glad I'm over with that]. I am naturally fair skinned, slightly a lil' darker than Nicole Kidman but I am becoming a lil more tanned as each day goes on. I believe that the SPF 85 is actually attracting more sunlight to my skin. I'm a lil' conflicted since there is no way I'm going to go outside without sunblock yet, at the same time, I do not want to get more tanned [for health reasons = skin cancer and for superficial reasons = fair~skin = my perception of beauty)

Also, somethin else that I was always curious about is, since I am naturally fair skinned and I am not deliberately tanning, if I stayed out of the sun for a good amount of time [or maybe if I wore covered clothing for a couple of weeks to a month/just overtime in general), would I get my fair skin back? From what I've heard, people get pasty when the weather is cold, for example, since they are always indoors. I know that I probably won't get my natural fair~skin back completely, but would I become lighter just by wearing more clothing while outdoors coupled with using sunblock? I used to use an umbrella while outside but then stopped after awhile since I felt it was kinda old~fashioned and lame.

Btw, I know I'm going to get a lota jives and comments about being from Hawaii and how I don't like to tan. And yeah, I get that I'm living in paradise and many people would kill to live here [blah blah blah], but personally, being fair~skinned is my perception of beauty. I would like to continue maintaining my fair~skin [or if possible, as I mentioned above, become lighter through your suggestions].

Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions and hey, even criticisms, I'll take those too

1. You can easily become obsessed and be a victim to your own warped perspective. A skin that is extremely fair might be tanned to you. Get a second opinion. Also get fotos taken and check yourself out (the mirror doesn't always help, due to lightning etc).

2. Everybody has a skin tone, don't try to become paler than you are by nature. Stay away from bleaching creams, they are harmful for your skin.

3. You need to reapply sunblockers every 30 minutes to 2 hours (depending on the product) or else it will not work.

My 3 cents.

And yes, you can lose a tan by not subjecting yourself to the sun, however this kind of skin tone usually isn't a "good" pale, its pasty and sickly. Don't go that route.

LoL I must admit, when I read this first part of the comment, I thought "what the hell is MindoverMatter talking about me being a victim of my warped perception". But then I thought about it and I could see what you mean how it could become an obsession. I am nowhere near that point and I don't believe that I will become that way. I understand where you're coming from though. I know that 2 of my girlfriends told me that they hate being naturally tanned [they are pretty fair for being filipino] and maybe I should talk to them more about this subject. I feel a lil' weird though cause they said that they envy how light I am [i'm Japanese, and they are about 3 or 4 shades darker than I am] so having a conversation about how I want to be lighter may, in my mind, make for an awkward or an uncomfortable conversation.

I just want to get back to my normal skin tone which is fair but if it is possible, than I would like it to be a lil' lighter than natural. [being more fair than my natural skin is most likely isn't possible or going to happen, so I am not going to go out of my way or to extreme measures to attain a certain 'fairness'. I'm not bothered by it either.

And yeah, I would have thought that bleaching creams would be pretty damaging to my [or anyone's] skin. That's a definite no deal for me.

I must reapply then. I apply it daily between 7:30-8 AM and walk through my college campus in the sun, have classes, and get back to my dorm between 3-5 PM. Applying the sunblock once probably just isn't enough.

Sickly? hm, maybe so. It's a matter of perception I suppose. We'll see how the reapplying goes.

Thank you for your feedback/3 cents, MindOverMatter :)

You're welcome. I have a very fair skin tone and I'd love to be able to even get a tan. But it's either white or lobster red for me.

Do you use apres-sun? It really helps the skin after you take off the heavy sun blockers. It's not so much for keeping the sun away (because you obviously use it after being exposed to the sun) but for keeping everything healthy and give it a good glow.

I use different products, but I keep a sunblocker from dr haushka in my bag. It's a stick and you can reapply it easily wherever you go. Really loving it (but you have to order online or on e-bay). Eucerin, Roche Posay are also good.

Your friends should be able to tell you when you get your natural skin tone back, even if they envy you a little. ;)

No, I've never heard of apres-sun. I use Banana Boat SPF 85+. I can't say it works well cause I really can't tell the difference lol. Maybe others can, who knows. That's where the second opinion which you mentioned that I get comes into play.

Hm, no I don't use Dr. Hauschka's products [i had to look him up to find out who he is]. Too bad his products aren't available in stores. Having a holistic-based sunblock stick sounds like it would come in pretty handy.

Btw, my response to:

If it's a tan that you want, take a vacay to Hawaii, sip on delicious Mai Tai/Margarita drinks overlooking beautiful Waikiki beach LoL. You'll enjoy yourself and there are many products here that will help you achieve your healthy tan glow that you want [there are endless amount of natural products that we have here, Maui babe is a really good one that I used when I had my 2 month phase of "Wow, being tanned is SO SEXY!" LoL]. Just a suggestion ;) The tourism industry should pay me if you do decide to come, lol

I'll be sure to mention your name. But I seriously doubt that I would get anything but a nice lobster tone. Last time I was in Mexico my then boyfriend bought me one of those giant hats to keep me away from sunlight.

I actually got a sunburn, because the hat had a little hole. It looked like a freak lab accident or a shooting aim.

(Don't try that at home, kids! You'll be mocked forever.)

LoL interesting.. I must admit I had to laugh when I read that you got sunburn from a tiny hole. I wouldn't have thought that is even possible, but apparently it is lol.

Anyway, thanks again for your response and take care!

Alright,

A prospective from a different climate. Yes, being out of the sun does make you pale.

Every winter we lose our tans and are all pretty pastey at this time. I grew-up outside working on our farm all summer. Long pants and short sleeves. I never totally loose my tan on my arms, but might be able to given enough time. You'll never get lighter than the parts of you that never see the daylight.

I can't give you any advice on sunblock because I don't use it. I almost never get sun-burned.

I could say that you might want to think about a long sleeved warm wear under armor for running if you're going to be outside 1/2 hour to 1 hour a day exercising. They're comfy, not hot and would reduce the tanning.

Wrong! I have been everywhere and back in regards to tanning and being pale/pasty.

When I was around 7-10, I played a lot outdoors and got myself a pretty decent tan. then from 10-17 I became engulfed in video games and became one of the palest people I knew. I was just as white as all the areas that had never seen sun. Then around age 17 I quit all the stupid video games and spent a lot more time out doors. My tan came back. Now I can go for months of no sun and still have a tan line, but I do know if you go for years, you WILL lose it. I just always wore pants ALWAYS!!!!!!! and ALWAYS long sleeve shirts. That is how the "emo" kids of today do it, but maybe you are too old to get that, and probably do not have many of those kids in paradise.

Just wear as much as you can, but its probably hot there, so use the sunscreen. When I was pale, I did it without any sunscreen.

I personally enjoy a tan more, and it is unhealthy to just *not* get sun, but you can stay healthy and be pale too! Good luck.

I used to try to stay pale. I didn't want a tan. But now I use light tanning lotion. Pale skin looks aged, once you get older. And it shows all the lines. When I have a little tan, I look much younger.
