Why do people say "be yourself?"

Recommended Posts

This troll Pi*sses up people's legs and tells them it's rain.

Not bad for a pre-pubescent 12-year old. It singularly delights in trying to run rings around people, but eventually, it will tire.

Mummy will come and say it's bedtime, soon, anyway.....

Who could you possibly be if you weren't yourself? The only person you can ever be is you. That part should be pretty obvious and self explanatory. You then go on to say that some people consider it a sin to change oneself. I have never heard this so I would like to see some references, perhaps you misunderstood the context.

Dull people never prosper. i bet person b would be a loner for the rest of his/her life.

Who says dull people never prosper? There are pleny of dull people who live highly productive lives. Just because someone is uninteresting doesn't mean they are worthless.

but dull people are hated, so why should anybody be dull?

Again, who says? Society? There are no societal norms, only our personal perceptions of what is normal. What you find normal others may find obscure or perverse or just plain dull.

it's not about hurting anybody else.

it's about how dull people suck, and are boring.

wouldn't it better if there were personality transplants? like if a person has a bad personality, their brain structure can be changed to make them more lively?

People whom you find to be dull are not necessarily dull ALL the time. Most of us just need the time and place or topic to come alive. I'm sure your are plenty dull in certain situations. Do you deserve a personality transplant?

people despise loners. this is just a fact.

If it is, as you say, a fact then please provide proof. Not just what you tell us are societal norms.

i don't know, nor care. people can think anything, no?

Doesn't this negate every post you have ever made? If we can all think anything we want then why bother asking what we think?

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

so you criticise me for being nasty and judgemental, when you call your schoolmate a loser who never talked?

i guess people are complex, huh?

religious people, for one, say that if a person changes themselves then God would punish them since He created everybody for a purpose. US society is still quite religious.

Who says dull people never prosper? There are pleny of dull people who live highly productive lives. Just because someone is uninteresting doesn't mean they are worthless.

but people like to be engaged and not bored by others.

Again, who says? Society? There are no societal norms, only our personal perceptions of what is normal. What you find normal others may find obscure or perverse or just plain dull.

in social situations there are norms of conduct. in a bar, it's not deemed normal behavior to pour a beer on somebody's head. not only is it humilating to somebody, it's also assault. what you mean by normal is what are deemed normal attitudes, values, etc. and yes these are relative like everything else in life.

People whom you find to be dull are not necessarily dull ALL the time. Most of us just need the time and place or topic to come alive. I'm sure your are plenty dull in certain situations. Do you deserve a personality transplant?

Human personality differs from place to place, granted. but to me dull people turn others off.

If it is, as you say, a fact then please provide proof. Not just what you tell us are societal norms.

See who in general are more popular and well liked, and in general it isn't dull people.

Doesn't this negate every post you have ever made? If we can all think anything we want then why bother asking what we think?

i don't understand this point. people can think anything just as people can do anything (in theory at least).

Says the critcal judge of persons A and B.:)

I think it's how American society is. We are a shallow and superficial culture.

So not true friend! Loners are sexy and mysterious.... yum!

well why don't they have any friends?

IMO, it's down to a few things:

- no one likes them.

- they have a condition which makes them misunderstand social contact.

- they are a bad person that has screwed too many people over.

- they choose to be a loner.

seems a bit depressing to choose to be a loner, doesn't it?

Maybe the people you think are loners actually have a rich life away from your observing eye, but they just prefer to avoid you.

Your judgement that they are dull and boring, choose isolation, etc. is really a product of your observations, and therefore reflects primarily on your interaction (or lack thereof) with them. Perhaps you are a person that they don't want to interact with, therefore you get the cold shoulder, therefore you project the reason to be that "they" are dull, boring, and "nobody" likes them. When in fact, the objective truth is that they seem dull and boring to you, and you don't like them.

What evidence do you have that someone you think to be a dull, boring loner really lives a dull, boring, unloved life during the vast majority of the time he or she is outside your view?

Maybe this is about you...

some people are loners since nobody likes them, and thinks they're a **** or scum.

that's just how life works, no?

not as complex as someone who argues inconsistency is nothing new and is acceptable because it's a known human flaw, so why all of the sudden the change in attitude of consistency.

LOL!!! Everybody is inconsistent.

To go against this specific argument. I know where you stand now. It's nowhere. And I used the word loser, because that is what you labeled the kind of person he is, by your standards according to your previous posts. Hoping you'd understand better, and yet you still were so completely distracted you missed the point.

i see plenty of people who walk around a lot by themselves, and they are worthless loners. they must have bad karma or something from a past life.

And I never said you were nasty and judgmental you said that yourself.

People here see me as nasty and judgemental, when I'm just voicing the values of contemporary US society.

Well everyone is imperfect if thats what you mean, I'm still not going to ever call it a lost cause. You make it seem that there is no reason to improve yourself in that aspect because it's easier to blend in with the inconsistency than to go against the grain.

And how do you really know those people are loners? REALLY. Someone can judge you for the first few minutes they see you, and call you a loner by their own standards but that doesn't make you one.

And I don't see your judgments as "values" of contemporary US society, I think they're more like flaws.

Why oh why are people still feeding this pre-pubescent 12-year old little troll?

Its threads are senseless, ans it just post what it feels like posting on impulse, just to start arguments.

Really people, leave the little green man to its own devices........

ok, are you 100% consistent? Are there occasions in which you don't always adhere to a strict guideline? as you say, human beings are imperfect. so we are prone to error and fault.

And how do you really know those people are loners? REALLY. Someone can judge you for the first few minutes they see you, and call you a loner by their own standards but that doesn't make you one.

lol!!! people with no friends are geeky, ****ty nothings, which is why they have no friends.

A flaw is relative, like everything else in life. I see it as a flaw that US society seems to care about celebrities a lot. but it still is part of the society, no? A culture can hold a principle, but this doesn't mean it's necessarily a good principle. It still nonetheless is a value of the culture.

I thought people turned to religion to better themselves. I don't think God punishes people who try to change, if you believe otherwise you will have to cite some scripture for me. US society and the world are quite religious.

True, yet here I am anyway.:)

Replace beer on head with punch in face and you have the answer to one of your other threads.

This is really a stupid thing to say. Who are you to judge everyone else? You aren't using societal norms, you are just being an ass. You can blame your opinion on anything you like, but the opinion still originated with you.

Just because you call it the truth, even if it is, doesn't mean it need be said. Some people call it brutal honesty, I call it assiness. You're still an ass.:)

I disagree. some persons are never lively and for this reason are the ****s of humanity.

Perhaps, but if you are going to use religion as a basis of you argument then you will need religious points of reference to back up your claim. Also, there is more than one religion in the world and yes, even in the USA.

i still don't see why it's wrong to do it though.

Because it is a societal norm. It is an unspoken agreement of universal behavior. If you don't understand societal norms then why do you use them to try to prove all your points?

i know it's true. ugly people are universally despised.

I don't despise him, I just think he's ugly. Ugly people tend to despise themselves more than anything else, because they don't fit into some misconceived societal norm.
