chris250
I say screw self improvement. Self improvement programs suck. I have no desire or motivation anymore to improve myself. I'm happy just the way I am. That is I desire to let myself go physically. I have high cholestorel and I will not do a damn thing about it. I will let myself gain another 20 pounds. I'm not going to shave for another 3 months. I already quit college. I don't need it to go to heaven and I also don't need it for getting a girlfriend since I don't plan to be serious with any girl at all. All self improvement books are a waste of money. If it was up to me I'd legislate a national decree to burn all self improvement books. So forget what other people say I need to improve upon. I'll be happy after I die. I don't need any self improvement to go to heaven. Everybody is going to heaven! Since I believe God is going to save everybody in the end anyway I don't need to quit any of my addictions. Author chris250
I won't go to hell forever. I just get to live in a miserable hell on earth for 80 years at the most! How about that? I only have 80 more years of misery to endure at the most and then I'll be at eternal peace with God. Thank God we don't live nearly as long as humans did in the days of Moses and Adam & Eve. I don't know how they managed to kill time for 900 + years. Living only 120 years at best today is a real blessing.

knaveman
You really think life is hell? That is so sad. I really do wish I could help you. Geishawhelk
Me too knaveman. I am so happy. How on earth could I be otherwise? This has been my personal mantra and motto for the last 20 years or so. I feel fulfiilled, content, healthy, joyous and serene. I have such an internal abundance of happiness it's a wonder I don't burst. Sorry that your views, philosophies and beliefs haven't brought you to the same state, chris. Maybe you need to change tack....

I feel fulfiilled, content, healthy, joyous and serene. I have such an internal abundance of happiness it's a wonder I don't burst. I am quite shocked that so many people choose otherwise. Maybe they just don't know any other way or they just don't want to know. I remember a time when the pain was a comfort because it was all I knew for so long. Now, life without that pain is so much more enjoyable. Like chris250 I wish everyone could understand and see the plain simple truth that I see. Also, like chris250, I cannot make anyone understand who doens't want to.

Island Girl
All self improvement books are a waste of money. If it was up to me I'd legislate a national decree to burn all self improvement books. So because YOU think they are a waste of money you'd stop anyone else from using them too? Don't they get a choice? Like ALL of your threads you post your views not wanting them challenged or discussed to hear other opinions. You just want everyone to agree with you because it is your way of the highway. You know best and you are NEVER wrong. All of your principles and rules are gospel. Didn't you post a thread about leaving LS and not posting anymore? Who was it that bet you wouldn't - although you get nothing constructive from ANYONE here because you already HAVE all the answers - who gets to pay that person the money? You because you didn't leave? *yawn*

If they were a waste of money, there wouldn't be such a market for them. Only you think they are a waste of money. Training, self improvement is a good thing for alot of people, just because you do not like it or want to partake doesn't mean others do not. Some people want to be the best they can or at least try, they want to expand their minds and make the most of life while they are here, but if you don't that is your choice and its good you are so happy & settled with that decision. Humans have the longest life expectancy now than they have ever had. Although if you let yourself go and let that cholesterol skyrocket, then you aren't giving yourself the best chance. Eve
I wonder what we can learn from the Chris experience? I know I am glad that I didnt let my anger consume me back in the day when really life did not seem worth living. In fact it was not worth living. As hard as change is, its worth it methinks. I am grateful for the people who came along and helped me and that I had the sense to listen to them.. though of course I fought it somewhat. Self improvement is essential for life, no matter who we think we are! Regards, Eve xx
Nikki Sahagin
Unless you are actually born perfect then everyone needs to improve. But it is not so much for others that you improve - well you know family, partners etc - but for yourself. That doesn't mean you NEED to or HAVE to. I remember in psychology once we were taught that human beings are hard-wired with two very contradictory drives; that of self-improvement and that of self-destruction. Self-improvement ultimately leads to reproduction - the desire to create and nurture a new life. Self-destruction ultimately leads to ones own internal desire for ones own death or at least a path of conflcit and suffering. I think many of us battle with these two drives today; between wanting to be happy and wanting to suffer. Just look at drugs, alcohol, smoking etc.

wuggle
Since I believe God is going to save everybody in the end anyway I don't need to quit any of my addictions. If there is a God not sure he will be too happy with the 'gift ' of life he gave you. But as there is no God anyway, IMO you will just end up a fat, lazy waste of space who left nothing of any value behind when he died, and will be remembered by no-one. Nikki Sahagin
Do you mean the fight/flight response Nikki? Regards, Eve xx No...though I guess it probably amounts to the same kind of thing. Though flight or fight is I think always a defensive stratergy? You run or you fight to protect yourself. I think this is more an intrinsic drive towards death and self-destruction rather than the self-protection that CAN come from sticking up for yourself.
dvsxx6
I say screw self improvement. Self improvement programs suck. I have no desire or motivation anymore to improve myself. I'm happy just the way I am. Apparently you don't truly believe in your own saying "Screw self improvement" because paradoxically you're posting a thread in what else, a "Self-Improvement" message board. If you're really happy the way that you are, that's great. However, this doesn't seem like the case. It sounds as though you're pessimistic and giving up on yourself. You probably feel as though you've failed in some aspects of your life. What areas of your life were you trying to improve on? That is I desire to let myself go physically. I have high cholestorel and I will not do a damn thing about it. I will let myself gain another 20 pounds. I'm not going to shave for another 3 months. So you are giving up on yourself... why are you doing so? What makes you think so low of yourself that you're going to go against the norms and against things that will save your life [taking care of yourself physically [iE high chlorestorol], etc] ? What is really bothering you? I already quit college. I don't need it to go to heaven and I also don't need it for getting a girlfriend since I don't plan to be serious with any girl at all. If you're only concerned about going to heaven, then great. You probably will. And okay, so college wasn't for you. It's not for everyone and that's good you've accepted that. You don't need college to be successful, though that's the traditional path most people go through. On the other hand, it sounds to me as though you actually do want a gf or might want to have a serious gf but you don't think it will happen. You must've got badly burned. What happened? All self improvement books are a waste of money. If it was up to me I'd legislate a national decree to burn all self improvement books. I agree some of it is garbage, but maybe that just wasn't the right solution for you. Depending on the issue at hand, self help books may not be the solution. Sometimes they exacerbate the problem and cause you to over-analyze sht that wasn't even a problem to begin with [like I said it really depends on what the issue is]. So forget what other people say I need to improve upon. That's true to a certain degree. It depends on what they're trying to get you to improve on. What are the things they are encouraging you to change?

I think you got "freedom" in a very wrong way. when you choose to freely do whatever you want, you put yourself into bondages, such as addictions, you become slave of things true freedom is a state of mind and heart, you can gain true freedom when you CAN control yourself; when you have the ability to control yourself, you gain real freedom. and the ability comes from God, people can try their best and only make no or a bit progress, but with God, everything is possible True satisfaction comes from our souls, not temporary fleshy satisfaction In the end only God can satisfy our souls But one point I agree with you, I don't want all that burdens of self-improvement. Every time I want to change myself, I ask God and leave the burden there and study HIS will and words, and HE even changed the things I wasn't aware of
CanadaGuy
As long as your happy with yourself.. then that's all that matters. Mea:) True, just like watching smokers with lung cancer on oxegen smoke, that makes them happy! And I think this person should take up heavy drinking, and go for a drive, that could be fun as well! And you don't have to worry about anything, GOD will save you and the person you could have killed. What the heck, gain only 20 lbs? Why not set your goals higher, why not 100 lbs, or get on TV gain 500 lbs. Eat another twinky!

I'm no theologian myself, but I agree with you. Though some of the self-help books and their authors are very well-intentioned, I question all of their mentality; I wonder, WHO grows up wanting to write self-help books? It personally doesn't make any sense to me... If you're happy with yourself, I envy you. Though I'm skinny as a twig and don't have overeating problems, I wish I could chase my desire for an attractive, intelligent, empathetic, reasonable female companion away; I always have to opt for pornography and other dirty pictures or else I literally snap. I wish George Carlin's (RIP) idea of "afterlife" (from his 2nd to last HBO special) would come true. I quit college as well; for the life of me, I can't bring myself to give half a damn of an interest in the classes I tried. I realized by my 2nd semester "wow... this BS is pointless!" You aren't alone. "How many of you have self-help books? Okay, that's your first problem. You can't help yourself, because your *self* sucks!" - Billy Bob Thornton "School for Scoundrels"
