Frodo
I'm going to a bar for the first time tomorrow, and I'm kind of scared. I've only seen bar interaction on tv, and I've waited till the legal age to drink, so now it's time. I'm not counting restaurant bars--I've sat at them, but I only ate food. I'm talking about a bar bar now, the kind where people watch football or hit on each other. What's the general etiquette? Do I have to pretend to be all ebullient and grizzly and stuff? I going to sports bar right now. Later I figure I can work my way up to the singles bars. I plan to just have one beer and some food or nachos to keep from getting over my head. So I'm just asking for some advice so I don't make a complete ass out of myself.
Ryan
It's a sports bar. You watch sports. With other people. Have a beer and some food. Are you seriously having this much anxiety about a social situation? Do you typically get anxious around social gatherings/places?
Author Frodo
Yes I do, if it's not a situation I've been in.
Author Frodo
I asked for advice. I might accidentally talk about something deep. I remember trying to have smalltalk once and ended up talking about Croatia. There's no way to hide it.
HokeyReligions
Just be yourself! Are you going alone or with someone? Watch what others do to see what is acceptable behavior. Don't think about what you may have seen on TV - that is all make-believe anyway. Listen to some of the conversations around you - I mean, don't lean over and eavesdrop, but pay attention to what you overhear naturally -- you'll see folks are just being themselves, enjoying a joke or talking about something serious. I've been to bars a few times, but it was never "my thing" and I just wasn't comfortable. I was being myself and sometimes "myself" doesn't fit in certain circumstances. If you are not comfortable in a bar you don't have to go to one. Try a few out and see.
Leikela
A sports bar isn't any different then going to a restaurant. You sit around and watch sports on TV or socialize. The only difference is that people are drinking beverages with alcohol in it. Are you going alone or with someone? I could see how you would be nervous if you were going alone but if you're going with a person or a group of people, it should be a breeze. There is no ettiquette for a bar. It's no different then any other restaurant setting. Don't fret!
Gaz
Are you going there on your own, or going with friends? If it's with friends, then just go with the flow and have a good time. If you're going on your own... well, that's kind of the deep end, socially, as you are forced to interact with strangers, and it sounds like (no offense intended) that might be a couple of steps too far for you at this time. Heidi2
Well, in less than 4 months from now, I will in fact be in the same shoes as you, now.. And, although I've seen how a bar format is ran, it's still different when in fact YOU actually get to be part of such format. Here's to the legal age of 21!!!

I remember trying to have smalltalk once and ended up talking about Croatia. There's no way to hide it. Hide what?....You're intelligence!? Frodo, thank you so much for the giggle. I like you already! You'll do just fine. All you have to do is grunt, holler and swing your arms around like the rest of the Neanderthals and you'll fit right in. No one watching a game is interested in forming complete sentences anyway...especially after a few rounds of beer.
