Brasilia, Brazil (LifeNews.com) -- A nine-year-old girl who became pregnant with twins after allegedly becoming a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of her father is reportedly going to have an abortion. The girl, from Sao Paulo, has not been identified, was found to be four months pregnant when she was taken to a local hospital after complaining of stomach pains. Doctors say they are suggesting the girl have an abortion because they don't think her body can handle the pregnancy. "We don't know if she will develop the pregnancy up to the end because of the structure of her body. It is a big risk for her,'' the doctor who confirmed her pregnancy , Jose Severiano Cavalcanti, told the Diario de Pernambuco newspaper. "She doesn't have a pelvis able to support a gestation of twins,." Abortion is illegal in Brazil, as it is in most of the other predominantly Catholic countries of South America, except in the rare cases when a woman is a victim of rape or incest or her life is in danger from the pregnancy. Brazilian media say the young girl was raped at the hands of her stepfather, who is 23, and that he has abused the girl since she was six. He also allegedly abused the girl's physically handicapped 14-year-old sister. The man was arrested on Thursday as he attempted to flee to another region in Brazil, and was being kept in protective custody.

The archbishop of Recife Brazil has excommunicated the family of a rape victim and the doctors who preformed the abortion. Frankly I don't know what to say. I had no ideal internal discipline went that far. Over on a fundamentalist Catholic message board I sometimes hang out on they generally support the bishop.

Let me just say that this, in my opinion is stupidity in its extreme, and nothing to do with catholic Religious central belief but dogmatic indoctrination and abuse of power by the Archbishop.

Whilst I understand the religious viewpoint with regard to the preservation of Life and the condemantion of murder, there are times when such stringent attitudes fly completely in the face of compassion, kindness and Unconditional Love.

The Bish? he ain't got it.
