Laxatives to lose weight???

Recommended Posts

This is a very dangerous and unhealthy practice.

The way to lose weight is to eat healthy food and to exercise. No other shortcuts, tricks, or 'rapid weight loss' schemes will be good for you.

Laxative use doesn't cause weight loss, it simply causes a drastic (but non-permanent) loss of "water" from the body. It's normal for women to retain some degree of water, particularly in line with their menstrual cycle. Laxative use does not ever cause a person to lose actual fat.

There are many documented *severe* health risks in abusing laxatives. The use of them can cause a person to lose so much water from their body, taking with it, essential electrolytes like potassium and sodium and chloride. Potassium loss is not something you want to play around with. Potassium is an electrolyte that effects muscle contraction. The heart is a muscle. A person too low in potassium is at risk for fatal heart problems.

Laxative abuse can screw up a person's intestines for life. Laxatives give a drastic kick-start to the intestines, by irritating them (which is why a person gets cramps when using them) so that they'll poop. Overuse, or even regular use can cause the muscles in the intestines to weaken severely, so that they can't even poop without them.....causing them to really NEED to take them, and needing more and more over time, to the point where they have horrible chronic constipation. This is not something to play around with.

I was stupidly hooked on laxatives back in my very early 20s. I won't even tell you how many I was up to per day. I thank God now, looking back, that I wised up and quit, and didn't do permanent damage to my body. However, it did take me several years to regain the muscle tone on my intestines...and up until that point, I dealt with horrible constipation on a weekly basis, sometimes going 7-9 days without being able to have a bowel movement because I'd screwed things up so badly.

Again, laxatives do nothing for weight loss except shock the hell out of the poor intestines, causing the person to end up with explosive diarrhea, thus sh*tting out a lot of water......which your body regains back in a very short time.

If you want to lose weight, this is not the way to do it. Join a gym. Go to Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. Find a nutritionist or dietician in your area who can help you figure out a proper nutritional diet to stick to. Increase your exercise. Eat healthy. Cut back on processed sugars and junk food and greasy food and starches like potatoes and breads and pastas and white rice. That's how you lose weight.

Although this comes from a website related to those with Eating Disorders (many people with Anorexia and Bulimia will abuse laxatives), the info on the dangers of using laxatives for so-called "weight loss" are still the same.

Dont skip a meal or two, tha is almost as bad as taking laxatives(ive done both, and DONT recomend it. Besides the fact taht it is bad for you, do you like it when you have diahrea, and you poop so much that it hurts? yeah.) Like others said, cut a little back from what you eat now, even just 100 to 200 calories a day, can go a long way. And cut back on soda, all that sugar, carbs and carbination, can really add up. Be safe about it

Skipping meals only cuases your body to store fat. Yeah, its all well and dandy while you lose weight, and as soon as you start eating normally again, you gain weight back. And it does burn it for energy, but after that, it eats away muscle. So PLEASE PLEASE do not skip a meal. Eat when your hungry, and eat more often. That will speed up your metabolism, beucase your body will become used to getting MORE food, and your body will know it has to burn more faster, therefore speeding up your metabolism. OH, and novascade, there have been studies, many studies, done on skipping meals ect ect. And it is not healthy, no matter how much fat your body has. Good try though
