Exercising more but putting on weight???

Recommended Posts

Heya!!

I have a question about exercising and weight management!

Around about december last year it was my off season and I had a pretty stressful event so I took my trainning down to about 3x a week.

I ate just the same but I slimmed down alot (about 5 kilos).

I was really happy with my new figure!!

I returned to full time training last month which consisted of 7 or 8x a week trainning for my sport and going to the gym for a work out 5 or 6 times a week.

Since I have returned to training my weight has gone right back on!

Im not eating any differently and am exercising frantically to try and lose it again but no matter what my weight just keeps going up!

Its crazy. im exercising like mad to get the weight back off but it just seems to go up!!

Why is it that when I stopped exercising that my weight went down alot but when I started up all the weight pilled back on?

Im not training to be a rugby player or anything and I dont do much weight training!

Sigh I miss my slim figure :(

Melissa,

I posted these responses to the same question on another forum. Hence why you'll see names in them. I hope they help.

Amy, you're going to gain weight when you work out initially because you build muscle mass. Besides, always give yourself +/- 5 pounds leeway for water/digestion weight.

The best way to tell if you're succeeding is to go by your clothes. If you drop sizes, you're losing fat.

If you're exercising, you cannot gain fat weight. Actually, as Lau! pointed out, adipose tissue is nothing more than pockets that hold fat. The tissue "swells" when fat is needed to be stored in the pockets. When they do lipo on you, they remove adipose tissue, not fat. Adipose tissue *contains* the stored fat.

Anyhow, if you're expending energy (exercising), you cannot gain the fat so you must be succeeding in building muscle mass as muscle weighs 3X as much as fat. Always keep in mind the +/- 5 lb. rule though.

Another helpful tip: Let's say you wish your goal weight to be 150. You need to allow yourself a 10 lb. "comfort zone" either way. If you float between the 150 and 160 mark, you are not only maintaining your goal weight in a realistic fashion, the +/- 10 lb. function allows for temporary weight gain and loss due to normal physiological functions (bloating from the period, water retention and loss, digestion functions etc.) and is considered to be very healthy. If you can mentally accept you will always have a +/- 5 lb. allowance when exercising and +/- 10 lb. allowance when you reach your goal weight, you are very healthy.

In short, you're gaining muscle mass which is heavier. Go by your clothing size.

Beautiful Inside

it could be what your eating thats what happened to me i was getting so frustrated i was working out every day with my bf who is a hard core machine when he gets into the gym but i noticed i was freakin gaining weight but not fat but muscles weights more then fat so thats why my clothes were fitting tighter but it wasn't fat it was like i was filling in the clothes better lol.... dont take any protein shakes thats how i gained a lot of unnecessary weight their very misleading....try slim fast or carnations for breakfast or lunch but stay away from the "protein light shakes" they will put weight on you trust me.
