Great book for atheists

This is a thread to all of you atheists (agnotists too) out there. There is a book that was written by Christopher Hitchens and it is called God is not great: How religion poisons everything.

No I have not read it yet but I do plan on buying it. The main idea is that he talks about the whole idea of religion along with churches are like a drug that poisons you, feeding you with things that don't make any sense at all, things you create in your mind. His position is that things are explained through science only which I totally agree.

Even if you were in a terrible crisis and having a really bad time, only you can help yourself. It's your choice if you want to work, make money and get better or put on waiting for imaginary miracles to come knocking on your door.

what happens if the engine fails and you realize you can't help yourself? Nor can anyone else?

just wondering ....

This planet and all the things that make life possible here is such a delicate and complicated balance.. one little thing off and we wouldn't exist.

I'm not sure about an old man with a white beard up in the clouds, but I find it very hard to believe we exist because of some random accident.. I also think Darwin was a nut case.

I believe in creation. I also believe things happen for a reason that is beyond us. I don't necessarily believe in fairy tales. So I wonder where that puts me?

Call a car mechanic anywhere you see a phone. But obviously you would have to have the phone number in advance. In orders have prior knowledge of basic car failure, be prepare.

Speaking of books, I have to say that The Bible was a very disappointing read. While I always knew that there is nothing like a God I thought it was important to actually know what is in the bible. I thought it would be a cool story, sort of like the Iliad or something, or that it would be inspiring or moving, wrong! The Old Testament just supports my atheism. I was shocked, all I could think was "no way! THIS is what people believe?!"

If you're reffering to science such as the big bang theory ok but if you're saying someone created us then it makes no sense. Thus the question to that would be ''and where did creation itself came from, how was did it originated scientifically''?

I'm currently reading In God We Doubt by John Humphries. He's a British broadcaster and journalist who takes a more neutral stance than Hitchins or Dawkins and simply challenges leaders of the three Abrahamic faiths to prove that God does exist.

Well recommended.

darwin served his purpose: He forced everyone to think about their belief system and why they held it. And that's a good thing, learning more about yourself rather than being blindly accepting of whatever is put out there.

Call a car mechanic anywhere you see a phone.

but isn't that failing to rely upon the self-reliance you so stubbornly insist upon? You're a failure for reaching out for mechanics-assistance, much in the way believers are failures for reaching out for spiritual-assistance. All faith/belief does is allow a person to reach out past self for help and guidance. And despite all the trappings and crap that often comes with religion, it too serves it's purpose, and that is to move man away from self, toward other.

You b**stards , stop spreading your hate propaganda , you're all going to hell !!!!

Only joking, Will give it a try. Would just like to say that "The God Delusion" by Dawkins was a profound book for me (got a bit of a slating in certain quarters though) - would definitely recommend. :)

Alina, have to agree after having read it (The Bible) a couple of times, it is absolute garbage, parts of it work ok in film format though so I suppose it's a bit like shakespeare (never really meant to be read)

Just to be fair, I also read the Koran (rubbish) , Mein kamp (scary rubbish) and some book about communism (Quite interesting , but my father always told me to stay away from commies , they all wierdos !!)

best book I ever read was one called "The little green book" , found it in a library once 30 years ago and never managed to find any reference to it since (must have just been a dream, pity, was full of really good stuff - ho hum).

No, but thanks anyway (way too radical for me ).

It was just called "The little green book", nothing else on the cover, contained kind of non-religious view of the world, sort of a mix of buddhism, quantum physics, social etiquette and philosophy - must have been a drug induced dream - shame.

Did you ever notice that puddles are exactly the same shape as the hole they're in? Amazing!

I think you'd be hard pressed to find LS'ers quoting atheism as "spreading hate propoganda." It appears most are in agreement with it's concepts.

Why thank you. I had my screen name changed for privacy reasons, esp. when you don't want people that know you finding out what you wrote about them. Now it must be tougher those that are in commited relationships. That name stands for a TV brand and tha xoxo is a either a cloth or purse brand.

You should probably read more subtle, modern books to develop an appreciation for Christianity

Id recommend Brideshead Revisited or if youre daring enough to jump back a century try Notes From the Underground by Dostoevsky

Im sure a lot of other people could recommend others

And why is Christianity or other religions more appreciated and yet when it comes to us atheists without any religion whatsoever then we are seen as complete strangers. In certain cases they can freely impose their views against ours but if we were to do the same then we might be given strange glances.

what?

that sounds paranoid

of course most people look at you like a stranger, you are a stranger to most people

that has nothing to do with theology

Why would atheists read books about atheism? I already don't believe in God, why do I need to read about why I shouldn't believe in God? :D

It's like a book titled "For You Who Don't Have Problems in Your Marriages"!
