Would you call this an Identity Crisis or OCD

Looking for insight, comments, etc.

I seem to have an OCD type thing when it comes to listening

to music or watching movies and such, i'm a big fan of both.

It's kinda like i never grew out of a certain "phase" though. I can't

quite put my finger on it, but i'm thinking it's a sort of "Identity" issue

or just a simple OCD.

My Problem is, I can't just listen to some music, without being

influenced by it. I HAVE to have a connection somewhere in

the there. I'll go and see movies and if it touches me, i'll want

to be like the main character and start acting like them. I guess

you could say i'm easily influenced. If i'm listening to say, Rob

Zombie for two weeks, all I want to do is watch horror movies and

research his past records, wanna know what he's up to next, find

out what gear his musicians play, etc. It's obsessive. It drives me.

I'll talk about it, or find ways to bring it up. I can see myself kinda

changing styles, etc. If it's Soundgarden, i'll want to buy more

grunge CD's. If it's Oasis, i'll start listening to my Blur and Oasis

CDs. I'll take on a whole new mindset for the month

Why do i obsess? it's a tad scary to myself. My wife notices i

go thru different musical kicks where i'm constantly listening

to a certain band and kinda won't shut up about them. It's like

i'm 13 or 14 again, but i'm 32.

What's my deal?

IMO, you want to be a musician so badly, that you'll "assume" identities.

wow. never thought of it in that way.

i would call it OCD by any means..... i go through different music genre moods too.

i used to imaging myself a s characters in some movies, and wonder how it would be to live with the movie as my reality.

i do not think it's a fault.... it is train of thought- apparently your train tends to stay on the same track until derailed by an even better thought.

now, if you could harness this into something lucrative or creative, you would be rocking!

that's so funny, Bonita...I too do this, i'll imagine myself in that

character's footsteps, try and gain some influence from it. But

i don't know WHY i do it and worry it's because I don't

know who i Really am.

Derailed until i reach an even better thought, sounds about right.

It's like i have a constant hunger for influence. I get really

inspired. when something hits me and I like it, i go crazy. almost

to the point where i want to figure out the formula and create my

own something. Or be part of it. Sometimes it feels pretty obsessive

to the point of embarrassment, in front of my wife say. That's why I feel I

need to get a handle on it. I'm not 13 anymore with posters

all over my walls, ha!

maybe you are just thirsting for personal inspiration..... or knowledge to grow?

i dunno, i don't think its necessarily a bad thing though..... unless it interferes with you daily life and abilities to deal and function.

Oh wow I do this at times too!

As you said, its when you relate to a character in a movie etc, so perhaps you are unhappy in your own skin? Or you wish to have certain skills/talents that the characters do. Or you are unable to deal with something as well as the character, so you try to imitate the characters responses. If any of that made much sense. It could just be pure fantasy for you; and fantasy can be harmless or harmful depending on how you look at it.
