The Law of Attraction--What do you think about it?

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to know your guys' opinions on the law of attraction. (for those who haven't read it or heard about it, it's bascially the idea of whatever your thoughts and emotions are, you will attract that in your life...For example, if you constantly keep feeling or keep telling yourself that you're going to fail at something, you are attracting that energy and will most likely fail.)

I was interested in reading it so I bought it but I felt both good and bad about it...because it stated that it could work towards you and against you...all depending on what you're thinking about feeling.

I'm very curious to know as many opinions on this as possible. :)

It is new-age claptrap.

It is typical of our society.

It is "What I want, I want to get because I deserve it."

Imagine the depressing fall when it does not always go your way.

I laughed out loud at times when I read parts of it.

It is ancient philosophy dressed up with a lot of greed, and desire.

Talk about taking words and twisting them!

Two hours after I bought the book, I threw it in a rubbish bin.

Hi alwaysme,

It's an interesting little book...I really enjoyed it.

I used the visualization techniques to attract money, and a nicer place to live.

Those were my two goals, but I had no idea how to reach them.

One day out of the blue, I was offered a nice, larger apartment (for the same rent!), in a pet friendly building (I have a cat).

What happened to me also was - one day I received a large check in the mail (thousands $$$)...I was shocked...and it came from the most unlikely source.

Both these events occured within the past year.

Currently I am back to referring to that little book in hopes I can achieve some new goals.

I am a firm believer that we attact what we are. If we are loving caring compassionate people, we will attract that, only if we can cut the others out once we see their huge shortcomings. I think that we mess up when people show us who they are at the core but we refuse to let them go. As long as I was bitter towards men I kept being in unhealthy relationships but once I started to get healthier (smiling, being genuinely kind, more loving and accepting of others), I am starting to attract a different kind of man.

Even my friendships have changed. I had to get rid of a lot of negative girlfriends that also thought all men were "dogs".

This is quite interesting to read, as this believe it or not seems to happen to me at times. For instance, there was a guy at where i used to work, his wife had tinnitus and had to listen to music a night to get her to sleep, i often thought what it must feel like to have this ringing in your ears all the time.. Anyway a few months later... i went to a concert, having never bothered before. We sat down and the music was that loud, i have now permenantly damaged my earing, with a slight ringing to my ears all the time.my friend wasnt bothered with it. Altho he did comment it was loud.. I now have ear protection and can still feel the affects after i come out of a club or concert.. Such things with other illnesses that people i know have had.. So i tend not to dwell on them anymore!!! maybe its just coincidence i dunno

I might invest into this book etc as i could do with some good luck! but i also believe we create our own luck at times.. And who can forget Karma.. I aint a bad person (or i dont believe i am.. put it this way i aint mugging or murdering anyone weekly!!!) , but this badness in my life at the moment is shocking bad at times..

Isn't that called attitude?

My problem with the Law of Attraction is that it seem to center on material things and it talks about attracting and not giving. Not enough there for me.:)

Everybody has karma.

It could be accumulated from this life or a previous one.

It's inescapable too.

yoou might be working through it.

negative karma can be obliterated and transformed by generating good karma....

So the law of attraction may feel good for a while. You may believe it is working.

But one day, when everything goes wrong, who - or what - will you blame?

Attitude with gratitude. I like that. That is funny..... :D

Gratitude to who?

I did also...

After reading the book, I don't let a day go by without being grateful for everything I have.

The Law of Attraction works to the extent of the amount of time and effort you put into making positive things happen for yourself.

Its a simple concept really. If you put your mind to something, you can take control of your life to make those things happen for you. If you constantly say "I can't" then you will subconsciously keep yourself in a perpetual state of negativity and not do the necessary things to get yourself out of it.

There really isn't anything paranormal or esoteric about it. The whole idea of the universe and the energy of the universe responding to your thoughts is bunk, the way I see it. But... the universe and energy of your brain is not bunk. Your thought patterns set your path in life. You either do things to help yourself or you don't. The more firmly your mind is set in either direction, the more you'll see yourself headed that way regardless of what you do.

I read "The Secret" and now use the techniques described to get parking spots in an overcrowded town.

As for helping my pathetic love life, not so much.

And some of it was downright offensive and disgusting--especially the part about weight gain being caused by looking at fat people.

And the part about imagining that the bills in your mailbox are turning into checks. Does not work.

Ah, self-fulfilling prophecies... while it is true that if you think you're sh*t, you'll get sh*t, the fact is that you can also think you're great and get sh*t.

1+1 rarely = 2. All you can do is be your best self and be excited about the randomness of the universe.

this idea is the OPPOSITE of thinking everything is a concidence. it's thinking everything is somehow connected in ways they aren't.

also, wrong.

I haven't read this book, but I do believe that you usually find what you are looking for.

This might be a stupid question, but I tried looking up this book and found 100,000 books with the same title. Which author are you specifically talking about? I've picked up reading lately and I'm constantly looking for new books to read and I don't see why this wouldn't be at least somewhat interesting.

I'm sorry I should have specified. I have The Secret on my list of books to pick up, I specifically meant which Law of Attraction book the OP was talking about.

I call BS.

The whole concept is just ridiculous and a ploy to make money out of pathetic people's lives. The Secret is actually nothing new, the whole theory of positive thinking has been around for centuries.

The only way you are going to get something out of it is if you follow your positive thoughts with positive actions and make things happen yourself. Just thinking and using positive affirmations is :lmao: I kind of feel sad for people that beleive in it.

Another benefit of positive thinking is that you will feel better about yourself and your life and in turn have better attitude and be more attractive to people. BUT that's where it ends.

Put it this way: I am the most negative person on earth. If the law of attraction was really true I would be jobless, homeless and friendless. Objectively, I have a great job, I have bought an apartment in the elite area of my city and payed it off, I earn enough to be able to afford anything I want without even thinking and I have people in my life that genuinly care about me. Granted my love life is beyond pathetic, but other than that I am not doing too badly.

The law of attraction is one of the most important universal laws that govern the universe. It is based on the simple concept that you attract whatever you focus your attention on. Some people will say that like attracts like. This would mean that if you have any negative aspect in life, you will always attract negative. But it need not be so.

Though we are often not aware of it, this law is constantly at work in every one of us. The truth is that you can learn to apply the law of attraction in your life through positive thinking and see a difference. By learning to apply the law of attraction, you can improve your overall self improvement.

I just want to say, I finally got a chance to pick up The Secret and...I really can't describe how differently I feel now. I chuckle at the naysayers, but you have your opinion and the right to it, and I respect you for that.

But I wish I would have gotten this book about 2-3 years ago. I think I would have been a much happier person at this stage in my life. But I know what to do and how to achieve it now. I'm not expecting to wake up tomorrow with a hybrid in my driveway or a supermodel in my bed, but I am expecting to feel better about myself and life.

 I find it interesting that the few negative nancies on this subject are the same people who are constantly crying, "Why is my life so horrible?!"

So perhaps that's proof right there that it works.
