 I find it interesting that the few negative nancies on this subject are the same people who are constantly crying, "Why is my life so horrible?!"

So perhaps that's proof right there that it works.

My life is subjectively horrible but not objectively horrible, if that makes sense.

Again, you prove the theory right.

You are what you think.

I agree with BEG. The Secret is BS. So, all I have to do is imagine that a hot chick loves me, and she WILL? OK! I'm imagining!

...

Sh*t. I'm still jerking off.

Just wanted to know your guys' opinions on the law of attraction. (for those who haven't read it or heard about it, it's bascially the idea of whatever your thoughts and emotions are, you will attract that in your life...For example, if you constantly keep feeling or keep telling yourself that you're going to fail at something, you are attracting that energy and will most likely fail.)

It's simply wrong. The dunning kruger effect is much stronger

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning-Kruger_effect

Fear of failure is often a very strong driver for the people who do the best, and under-rating ability is a common trait amongst those who are much more talented and adept than the norm. Conversely deluding yourself is a common trait amongst those that lack skill

That's based on science and not mumbo jumbo about energy

The Dunning-Kruger effect is a fancy term for the fact that people have confidence in themselves, often too much confidence.

And?

And most of them will pick up that book and think thinking positively will turn them into a sex god when the truth is they'll still be looking like a back end of a bus after they've put it down.

The law of attraction is much simpler.

The law of attraction is a weird way of describing self-fulfilling prophecies. If you think poorly of yourself, you will have a crappy attitude, thus creating an aura of "LAME" which'll make everyone avoid you. It's basic logic, IMO.

I 100% agree with this. The most talented people that I have met are quite modest about their abilities. Confidence is WAY overated in today's society. I have met many people who think that overconfidence and self promotion will compensate for their lack of ability.

If you think poorly of yourself your friends will tell you to quit being hard on yourself.

If you think you're great when you're not you come off as an arrogant nob and that turns people off a whole lot quicker than self deprecation.

Assuming you have friends. And they'll only tell you that if they're really good ones.

Maybe so, but what does that have to do with the law of attraction?

True. I'd even go so far to say as a lot of them are highly insecure about it.

But that's what makes them good - they work that bit harder because they think they're that bit worse.

Or, like me, you can be supremely confident about your skills (mine are musical), but be outwardly modest.

If you are obese, objectively unattractive and not intelligent thinking that you are the opposite of those things won't get you anywhere. All it will do is make you delusional.

You are what you are an you are much better off doing practical things to better yourself while being realistic about your abilities.

I can see straight through overconfidence, an truthfully, it's laughable.

Law of attraction type of materials only promote self-delusion.

That's an attitude borne out of misanthropy.

It's pretty obvious kizik, just because you think you'll attract something doesn't mean you will, and just because you don't think you'll attract something doesn't mean you won't. Don't see what's so hard to understand.

Don't use that tone with me, young man. Or woman. Yeah, it is obvious. So obvious that it didn't need a thread.

.

I think that's very true.

I did sport to a high level when I was younger. In sports, positive mental attitude and visualising things positively definitely does have benefits at a high level. I remember asking my coach about this and he told me to go improve my footwork because no amount of thinking was going to compensate for how bad it was

My point is obvious.

Spoiling for another fight? Go and think about getting laid.

A fight? Where, on the Internet?

I have no desire to argue with someone who's just trying to hassle me. Dude.

Kizik, are you a dude as well?

Yes.

I thought this thread was asking for opinions on The Law of Attraction. People shouldn't be told their opinion is wrong when it was asked for in the first place.

Everybody has karma.

It could be accumulated from this life or a previous one.

It's inescapable too.

yoou might be working through it.

negative karma can be obliterated and transformed by generating good karma....

So the law of attraction may feel good for a while. You may believe it is working.

But one day, when everything goes wrong, who - or what - will you blame?

_/l\_

The Law of Attraction leaves out the "cause and effect" or "momentum" of your past and also leaves out things like who your parents are. It is true that the past is over, but it still happened and there could be consequences. I think they left it out, because they don't want people stuck in their past, because you can still change. However your ability to change is not infinite or instant. If you make $10/hr then you could shoot for $15/hr a year from now, but probably not $30/hr. in only a year. But going from $10-$15/hr job is an accomplishment, and is made possible by what you think, say, and do. So, in a sense "the law of attraction" is bullcrap, but in a sense it is true. The bottom line is your thoughts actually do effect your life. The hard part is taking responsibility even when your life is really unpleasant. As a side note, stuff will blindside you. When that happens it is probably Karmic.

The successful people in your life have developed a strong relationship with themselves, become very clear about their passions in life and made the choice to follow them with enthusiasm. They don't have to force themselves to work on their goals each day. They look forward to it!
