daveo679
I am sure a lot of members will jump on me for this but hey it worked for me. I was divorced, bored, stale, no motivation, nothing much to look forward to, 42 years old and what chance much of finding a nice girl in England after a bad divorce. A guy I met had just returned from Thailand and started telling me about it, of course the main topic was the girls and before we start on the amount of prostitutes here I will compare them to a pal of mines wife who will only have sex with him when she wants a new coat or similar. So to cut a long story short a couple of weeks later we are on a plane heading for Pattaya, Thailand. I wont go into details but I was born again, I have never been so affected by something so thoroughly, and the whole thing inspired me, I returned to UK, worked my situation out and moved here 4 years later ( 5 years ago) I have not been back to the UK once in that time and look forward to every single day, the climate is great, I play Golf on over 25 supherb courses within 1 hour of Pattaya City. I run a successful busines here, have a lovely Thai wife, an ex Teacher, she is 41 I am 51, I can do so much more here in a relaxed manner a laid back way of life that I never thought possible, sure there is prostitution, and once you understand it and dont put western values on things you understand a lot more, there is corruption but not as bad as the media print but what is, so you get stopped for not wearing a helmet on your bike, you maybe can bung the officer 100baht (2 GBP) in UK you would get 3 points on your licence, 60 quid fine and your insurance would go up so.......... So Thailand of course is not for everyone but I have made a lot of new friends here like me were revitalised by the place and wouldnt change it for the world. You can Google Canterbury Tales Cafe Pattaya, and that will be me.

Enema
I have entertained the idea myself. Since everything is so cheap, I could keep a couple of houses here in Australia and use the rental income (87,000baht a month) to fund a very comfortable life there. My wife's family is from Laos and she speaks the language so we'd be fine that way too. Cool beans.
clv0116
Ya I've considered it, I'm tired of just working all the time and I could live someplace like that on some of the interest earned from investments, maybe even build the nest up with a few remote coding contracts. Why not?
burning 4 revenge
I don't really like the idea of being an expatriate I like feeling alienated from everyone in my own country
redfathom
This is amusing because David Carradine couldn't cope anymore so he went to Thailand and killed himself...
marlena
I don't really like the idea of being an expatriate Don't knock it until you've tried it, B4R! You people do not know what you are missing. It's a whole new world, a much better quality of life. And I do not mean money.

Citizen Erased
a whole new world of international pedophilia and kathois no thanks Silly, that's just where the old queer pop stars from the UK and US go for said "pedophilia and kathois". I don't feel the need to move because there aren't many places in the world nicer than where I am. Can you say the same b4r?
marlena
a whole new world of international pedophilia and kathois no thanks Oh, come on. You people are fed with so much cr** about the rest of the world that is so erroneous! Instead of believing everthing they would want you to believe, travel a bit and then draw your own conclusions. Then, I'll listen. P.S. Your assertion that Europe is dying is ludicrous. Europe is a continent heeped in history and culture and that, my dear friend, is an unshakeable edifice. I don't feel the need to move because there aren't many places in the world nicer than where I am. Can you say the same b4r? I like where I am Its not a very pretty place naturally, but I'm not far from one of the greatest man made environments in the world And the county I live in produces more corn and soybeans than any other county in the U.S. and that means food on people's plates My snide little comments about other cultures doesn't mean I don't respect them. I love Europe and I find its history fascinating, amazing and unbelievably tragic. Just because I love a place and its peoples doesn't mean I can't make fun of them. Don't you make fun of those you love? Admittedly I know nothing about Thailand except pad thai and kathois, but a lot American men who go to live in Asia often go for all the wrong reasons...they want to take advantage of the poverty of others to escape their own lonliness or hard circumstances in their home country...and theyre not horrible people by nature, but I believe by doing these things it makes them atrocious monsters in a kind of way My mother is from Cuba as you know. Her brother..whom I love dearly..was telling me that Im young and single and should go down to Cuba sometime to enjoy the women. He was telling me a story about a friend of his who went down there and asked a prostitute where a bathroom was and she said "my face is your bathroom"...and he was talking like this was a good thing I just felt sick. These are your own people I was thinking to myself. But it becomes so easy people don't stop and think about it Do you see where Im going with this.. I dont mean to sound preachy
burning 4 revenge
One more thing look at the title of the thread "Cant cope..come visit Thailand" Sounds pretty accurate to me
sally4sara
Saw wat dee crop! (I cannot spell it proper!) I have a handful of friends (they were all friends and absorbed me ) who spend 4-5 years in Thailand. One brought his GF back with him and they got married. She lived there her whole life and is a distant heir to the king's family. Things they told me about Thailand: Men can tell their wife and children to eff off and never contribute to their financial situation. Prostitution and the traffiking of women is high. Children too, to a slightly lesser extent. A girl of 13 is fully a woman and fair game sexually. The prostitutes generally did not choose their situation. It is highly customary for married men to have a person on the side of any gender they like without being shunned over it. Weed is cheap; just don't get caught with even a pinch! The women are commonly on diet pills and bleach their skin. Dark skin is not considered attractive. Don't point your feet at your elders! School boys play ass grab and ball slap like its the best thing ever. I really love the knock to "western culture and standards"; especially when it is western men who are intrigued rather than disgusted by the forced prostitution they find. Your friend was obviously of a high social standing. I've been to SEA a lot, although never Thailand. I've talked to, dated and otherwise interacted with a lot of ex-hookers and their friends and associates. They have never heard of ANYONE being forced into prostitution by anything stronger than material need. Also, it's good to note that several high ranking officers in agencies and NGOs tasked with investigating human trafficking have actually resigned with the reason given that there is a focus on prostitution much out of proportion to the part it plays in trafficking. According to less biased sources most human slavery is actually non-sexual in the world today, but it's not given the press coverage it deserves.
