Katherineos123
I recently read somewhere that daily vitamins in fact are completely ineffective for improving your health, and in some instances, may even cause more harm than good!! Now, I take a multi-vitamin everyday... and I truly have a hard time believing that they provide NO health benefits.... Has anyone else heard/read about this?
EddieN
It's not good to take too much, as with anything, but daily vitamins definitely help. Unless you have some sort of disorder where you need more of a particular vitamin, a multi-vitamin is the way to go. Our body needs certain essential vitamins that we can't manufacture. You can't always be sure what vitamins are in the foods you eat, so taking a daily multi-vitamin is the most effective thing to do.

I simply cant believe that taking a vitamin supplement could actually be detrimental to your health... but some argue that they really have no effect at all on preventing disease... http://archinte.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/short/169/3/294 Hmmmm... you said you dont think its not good to take too much... were you implying that you dont think its beneficial to take a daily vitamin.... well.... daily? No, I take a men's one a day multi-vitamin...daily. I don't know...I knew one meathead who had whole jars of like 10 different vitamins and he'd take each daily. That's too much methinks. I remember for a while some people were saying huge amounts of vitamin C could significantly buff up your immune system and protect you from practically anything. That was way off the mark, obviously. So, I don't think they can harm you...they can just be ineffective...but I don't know. Something doesn't seem right about loading your body up with more vitamins than it needs. Like, the excess might build up somewhere.
runner
i've gone on and off on daily vitamins over the years, and i can honestly report feeling ABSOLUTLEY NO DIFFERENCE either way. i'd rather use that extra money to purchase organic produce - which i do. if you really want to feel healthier: (a) exercise more, (b) eat less crap, © have more sex. voila ! 2030
With someone like me with a zinc deficiency. A multivitamin is the perfect solution for getting rid of my hand tremors and insecurities. I do not take a zinc supplement because it contains a crazy amount of zinc(30mg) which causes headaches in my situation. People that are insecure and scared as everyone puts them. They are in fact not, deficiencies in vitamins will cause lack of motivation, lack of interest in sex, lack of a back bone. Excersize of course plays an important role because we are not hunting our own food anymore. More of us are inactive and also stress causes the body to loose vitamins rapidly. Now, I take a multi-vitamin everyday... and I truly have a hard time believing that they provide NO health benefits.... Has anyone else heard/read about this? yes, if you eat a normal healthy diet and have no major deficiencies then you are fine. any additional vitamins are gotten rid of by your system. blind_otter
I am breastfeeding my son still, and I take a prenatal vitamin. If I stop taking it, my hair gets thinner and my nails start to peel. This is probably because of the additional demand on my body to support another human being... But my diet is not completely balanced. I don't think I could ingest the amount of food they say you should. So I take a vitamin to cover my bases. But the truth is that most adults in the US do eat a lot of food, but not a very balanced diet - so it's possible to be obese and malnourished at the same time.
donnamaybe
Another thing a dietician told me about vitamins is that many people take them as part of their bed time routine, which means they often have nothing in their stomachs when they do so. In this case, you just pee the vitamins right out before they get a chance to be absorbed. She told me to take them after I eat.

Author Katherineos123
Oh. I never heard that Donna. I usually take mine in the morning with breakfast, and by the time I get to work my pee is florescent yellow! Because of the b12! Hahaha. Alpha: Ive heard this before. That although some may eat enough calories, they skimp on the essential fruits and veggies, which have the majority of nutrients in them, and this is why I take them. I eat relatively healthy, lots of fresh fruits and veggies, but like Blind_Otter, I dont think I could possibly eat all the servings suggested, which is why I thought an extra boost would be good... But then I read that article, and I was wondering whether or not I was wasting my money!
alphamale
... But then I read that article, and I was wondering whether or not I was wasting my money! you're wasting your money...some people THINK they feel better on vitamins but its all a placebo effect. in essence you take the vitamins (which cost a bundle BTW) and EXPECT to feel better so your mind tricks you into thinking that you feel better and are healthier when all you're doing is peeing out the vitamins and lining the pockets of the vitamin company CEOs

Great to hear. The benefits of Vitamin D are only recently being discovered. Our ancesters got much more of this vitamin than we do as a result of beingoutdoors nerly all day. People with underlying conditions can often benefit from supplementation of specific vitamins and minerals. Magnesium, for instance, is hard to get enough of through diet and is essential in regulating blood pressure.
dunstable
I simply cant believe that taking a vitamin supplement could actually be detrimental to your health... A few years ago, I said the same thing to my brother, who is a doctor, and he sent me a package of papers from medical journals about how vitamins could shorten life expectancy. I'm sorry I don't have the references immediately to hand. If you research it, I'm sure you will find that there are hazards associated with vitamin supplements. My assumption is we get all the vitamins we need from our food and I don't take any supplements.
mark982
ah, drs. against vitamins, until the outlaw them(like some countries)then you need script to get them.then drs. make more $$.something wrong with this picture;)
blind_otter
People with underlying conditions can often benefit from supplementation of specific vitamins and minerals. This is very true, and the thing is that prolonged vitamin deficiencies from poor diet and lifestyle (smoking, being overly sedentary, excessive alcohol or recreational drug use, job stress, interpersonal relationship stress...on and on) can cause chronic illnesses, which we tend to medicate, ignoring the root issue. Magnesium, for instance, is hard to get enough of through diet and is essential in regulating blood pressure. Oh yes. And the soil that we grow our produce in is of such poor quality that the nutritional content of the food we do eat isn't all that great, either.
JessicaB
If you have ever tried a double dose of B vitamins, Iron and Chromium Picolinate it gives you a big rush of energy I take it before working out and I can feel it Never felt any better or worse with multivitamins, but I would think it wouldnt hurt

westernxer
The vitamins and supplements industry is a scam, but it's one that employs a lot of people. Society frowns on sloth, so the barrage of advertisements about quick energy solutions and what have you will continue to rain down on us, because the idea of not living each day to the fullest is appalling to those who fear idle time, as if there's anything wrong with lower output and smelling the flowers at your own pace. I admit to taking a Centrum multivitamin in the morning with breakfast, but that's as far as I'll go, and it doesn't make me feel any better or worse... I'm still as tired as ever on weekends. LOL By the way, they just recalled Hydroxycut: http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm149575.htm
