qdobajoe
We are a newlywed couple...about 3 weeks now. We had a big wedding of about 200-220 people. We ended up getting a number of gifts including a good some of money. Now, as the guy, I honestly felt that I got "ripped off" and really did not get any gifts that I consider to be cool for a guy, etc. So bottom line, was it wrong for me to use the wedding money to buy a new recliner for us? carhill
So bottom line, was it wrong for me to use the wedding money to buy a new recliner for us? Hell no! Get a flat screen while you're at it. Everything in balance
happy girl
I don't see it as a problem as long as it doesn't start trouble between you and your wife. If I were married and my husband wanted to spend some of the money, I would want to go shopping for a recliner and TV with him. This is coming from a woman that hates to shop anywhere other than Best Buy.
Lucky_One
It depends. Did you consult her about style and price, or did you go out and buy the Cool Cat Catnapper Chaise Rocker Massager Recliner with Storage Refrigerator and Dual Cupholders? Carhill, stop causing trouble!
Ronni_W
was it wrong for me to use the wedding money to buy a new recliner for us? If you didn't consult her, then yes, you acted inappropriately with joint finances. But the REAL problems are only going to start if you continue saying, "But honey, I bought it for us." You bought it for YOU, so don't piss her off by pretending otherwise. Congrats on your marriage As a wedding gift, may I suggest marriagebuilders.com to you and your bride. In the section on conflict, there are links for "financial decisions" and "first year". And you may want to look at the 'policy of joint agreement', too.

Carhill, stop causing trouble! Hey, I would be pleased as punch if my husband came home with THIS model .
carhill
Carhill, stop causing trouble! LOL, I figured his new wife might like a flat screen better than an air compressor, which would've been my first choice. Compromise

whichwayisup
As long as you share the recliner with your wife once in a while, then I don't see why it isn't a big deal..
2sure
The wedding money is yours to spend. If the wedding is paid for - do with it what you will. I would have no issue in your spending it on "toys" for the house like a tv or .....a recliner?? You bought a f'g recliner?? For WHERE?
Lucky_One
The wedding money is yours to spend. WHAT? How about theirs?
quankanne
technically, your recliner isn't even a "me" gift – in the quank household, that would be considered something for the house because it's furniture that you'll both use. my guess is that if your gal's complaining, it's because yu didn't think to consult with her. Silly, yes, but when it's for the house, talking it over is a must. incidentally, I've found that the longer DH & I have been married, the "house" has received the better (and more costly) gifts – why, for our anniversary two weeks ago, Casa got a really, really nice french-door fridge
2sure
WHAT? How about theirs? Wow! Can't believe I said that! THEIRS of course! Also, I wonder what OP meant by saying among the gifts he felt "ripped off" as far as guy gifts?? Like towels, sheets, and china are for his wife? Please.
quankanne
I can see his point – those things are "wifey's choice" that guys simply go along with. A comfortable chair is a whole 'nother issue, because that's the place *he* is going to be parking his butt every single night. And he should reserve the right to get what he wants. after all, we don't want our guys picking out our shoes or accessories, would we? They have no sense of what feels good or is practical or what stuff is even for!
BlackLovely
How much did the chair cost? What does it look like? Women usually take over decorating the home; maybe your wife didn't like the chair or maybe she felt like you should have consulted her. I'm getting married in Oct 2010. I'd be angry if K did this to me. I like Marriage Builders, except for their views on living together before marriage. I live with my fiance and I wouldn't have it any other way.
