griffinchicken53
wondering if anyone does yoga and what progress have you made from it. i need to lose some weight, and would like to be more flexible. i'd like to tone up a bit rather than build alot of muscle. right now my thighs are big, probably muscle but there is definitely some fat, and i need the fat gone rather than the muscle push the fat out. my pants are snug in that area. any other benefits to doing yoga? i have a dvd a friend gave me but i've never watched it is it better to go to a class to start, so you know the right way to do it? Athena
I've been doing yoga for over a year... it doesn't bulk you up, you DO tone up! All that stretching and strength building is great. I have attended yoga at my gym (35 students) where the teacher cannot correct anyone... I always am at the front of the class, and observe the teacher closely to get the positioning correct. It helped to look over a book, with the photos and explanations of knowing how to BALANCE your pose. In another yoga class at a recreation center, the instructor had only 6 students, and went around placing his hands on the students to correct them! Great for learning quickly... so... really, it depends on where you would go to learn... and even other instructors I have been taught by, have such a different style! Anyway, just start! Since you have the DVD -- start with that. I enjoy it so much... do the deep breathing... after some time you get the hang of it and learn how to relax... I attend classes late at night and after those I am ready to sleep!
Athena
so you know the right way to do it? Just want to add, my yoga teacher always reiterates that Yoga is a practice... not a performance!! That is -- you may not get it the right way, but keep on doing what you can, and you will improve over time!
shoesies05
I would think that taking a class in person of course is the better way to go because a video cannot show you what you are doing wrong also it doesnt make you feel bad if you decide to stop in the middle of it all and give up, whereas most likely you'd be too imbarassed to just leave in the middle of a class. But of course start with the video, it will give you a good taste of yoga and will let you see if you like it or not. If you love it, take a class and try to get in a class with the least amount of people as the person before me said. Yoga will tone you up. Stretching is such an important part of working out, and yoga is perfect for this... so your flexibility will increase (which i love yoga for!). See, as we build muscle our bodies become less flexible- making us more stiff and prone to injury. ( im no expert, but this is based on my biology class plus stuff i read). Luckily though with yoga we get the best of both worlds, flexibility and strength. No, it will not bulk you up. But- if you want to lose fat, you have to do cardio... JUST building muscle won't do it. Id say yoga is a great start to get in shape as long as you enjoy it, then make other steps from there. Besides- look on google. see how many people doing yoga poses look like the hulk! not too many, so dont worry- it wont make you look that way. Good luck! (hope it wasnt too long)
