shoesies05
Ive asked a few people, and everyone tells me not to list any jobs i was fired from or that i was a bad worker at. And a couple of years ago i was stupid and always showed up late so i got fired from a job that i loved. Since then, ive always been nervous applying to jobs. Im only 21 and am applying for jobs like grocery stores as a clerk or stuff of that sort. They say they are going to do a background check upon hiring... which it says will show work history. whenever i put that i was fired on my applications i never got calls back for an interview. when i started lying about it i did, but still am always so scared and feel so bad doing so. does anyone know if that is true( about work history showing up in a background check/consumer history) ? or have any recommendations? thanks! TaraMaiden
Always list all jobs. But only give superficial details, not contact details. Give references from jobs you were happy at. Or just put "References and testimonials upon request" at the bottom.
Author shoesies05
yes, but wouldnt that be better for resumes? im talking about like applications that you fill out- where they ask if you;ve ever been fired and for all the contact information.
BUENG1
yes, but wouldnt that be better for resumes? im talking about like applications that you fill out- where they ask if you;ve ever been fired and for all the contact information. I don't believe being fired will show up on a background check. It would be discovered however when employers calls your reference, or if they asked for contact information. Sometimes companies will only give out dates and names for of legal repurcussions, but this isn't a guarantee. The reference may however ask is you are eligible for rehire. But I dont believe it will show up on a credit report/background check.
RA1
I would advise you not to mention being fired. If the form asks a direct question, it's tricky to know what to do. My inclination would be to lie and risk it. Many employers will only give dates of employment for fear of being sued so there's a chance of getting away with it. If you admit to being fired, you may not make it to the next stage. You need to take a calculated risk. Good luck.
butcher's hook
Not true, you should list all pertinent information/jobs. What you do not want to do is use a bad job as a reference.
Jilly Bean
First of all, applying for minimum wage clerical jobs is not going to warrant a background check. They may quickly run your credit report, and possibly a criminal records check. Beyond that, at your level, they're not going to be that concerned about your history. And honestly, at 21, getting fired isn't that unusual. I would, however, list all the jobs you worked at, even if you got fired. BUT, list a friend who liked you to be your reference. And definitely let them know in in advance and ask their permission to do so. If no one will vouch for you, then list a real friend as a reference.
Citizen Erased
I know with the company I work for, they won't give bad references for past employees. People can and do actually sue their former employers for loss of income etc if they give them a bad reference for another job. So my company will only confirm dates of employment. Have you had any jobs since the one you were fired from? I tend to only put the contact details for my last two or three jobs anyway, they're not going to call every single employer. If it happened to me, I would never volunteer the information that I was fired.
amerikajin
I know it's a bit late, but my advice is to never lie on a resume, on a job application, or in an interview -- even if it's about a minimum wage job. Almost every job I've ever known makes you sign an application form with a disclaimer that states clearly any falsity can be grounds for dismissal. That disclaimer has teeth, and you'd be surprised how it can get a person in trouble down the road. Then you'd have to explain why you've been fired from two jobs instead of just one.
